> " We should be glad that people are choosing to use Signal, an end-to-end encrypted messenger. "

^ That's the most ridiculous thing I've heard today. It's not enough!

It’s not enough to simply be happy that people are using Signal because it offers end-to-end encryption. That alone does not guarantee safety or trust in the long run.

Why?

People were once misled into thinking WhatsApp was private and secure. That trust was broken. If the same happens with Signal, even fewer people will be willing to move on to a better platform next time.

Just look at how governments spend billions to convince people to vote — not to vote a certain way, but simply to keep them engaged in the process. Why? Because once people lose faith in a system, they stop participating. The same applies here.

Many people still use WhatsApp today, not because they trust it, but because their friends and families are on it. It becomes harder to break that cycle when people feel burned or misled again and again.

That’s why recommending Signal — just because it’s currently encrypted — isn’t good enough. We need to think long-term and advocate for platforms outside U.S. jurisdiction — beyond the reach of governments that are increasingly hostile to privacy, free speech, and civil liberties.

If you move your friends and family to Signal, and they end up feeling betrayed by yet another “secure” app, they might give up entirely. Maybe you’ll keep moving on, but most people won’t.

Being happy just because people are using encrypted apps isn’t enough. We must guide them toward platforms that won’t betray their trust in the future — and that starts by choosing ones that operate outside authoritarian-leaning regimes.

The product or service you recommend to your friends and family should not be based in China, USA, or Russia.

You need to think long-term, because the governments that have oppressed — or would oppress — freedom of speech and privacy most certainly do think long-term.

Let's do some digital role playing (nothing naughty).

You’re a chat messaging service provider. You’ve got your base server, redundancy service, backup servers, and extra servers for even more redundancy.

On top of all this, your servers focus on storage — lots and lots of storage. In fact, all your servers are filled to the brim with terabytes upon terabytes of storage on each drive, plus backups of those too. You’re collecting so much data that you’re expanding your data center and leasing or buying more servers with storage.

But you’re supposed to be a private, end-to-end encrypted chat provider. Yet, you keep needing more and more storage faster than your user base is growing.

This is the story of both WhatsApp and Signal. One is owned by an evil corporation (Meta), and the other, people blindly trust. Both are in the United States of America.

I lied — it’s all naughty! And that’s the way WhatsApp and Signal like it.

Very much looking forward to app interoperability with WhatsApp so I can finally get rid of the last Meta in my digital life.

"WhatsApp is spying on people! What should we use?"

"Use Signal."

"But it's based in the USA, where freedom of speech isn't so free, and the government is spying on everyone."

"Shhh. Trust Signal."

"But you can't verify what's happening on their servers!"

"Shhh. Ignore that detail."

"Shouldn't we use something outside the USA — just like we'd avoid apps from Russia or China?"

"Shhh. Stop asking questions and use Signal."

Want to spot the bad faith actor?

They insist their choice (Signal) is the only right and correct option — even though it's located in, and governed by, the same rules (USA) as the previous choice (WhatsApp).

Meanwhile, you’ve got people like me offering you multiple options, from multiple jurisdictions — and the choice is yours.

I am a META employee, and I know for a fact that several corporations are working closely with the United States government.

The U.S. is not a safe jurisdiction.

We're not just targeting criminals or terrorists — we're targeting people. Everyday people. People like YOU — who choose to use a Fediverse site instead of one owned by an American corporation. YOU — who dare to think twice about your privacy and security.

And we're doing this while cracking down on everyone — even celebrities — who speak negatively about Charlie Kirk.

Wake up! You're standing in the fire, and it's time to get out of the building.

Do not use WhatsApp or Signal.

Both are owned by U.S.-based corporations, developed in the United States, and their messages pass through U.S. servers.

I remember COVID and how people were spreading misinformation, and when you pointed out that they were spreading misinformation, they said you were being rude.

Facts are not rude. Misinformation is.

WhatsApp and Signal are not safe. They pass messages through servers based in the United States of America, owned and operated by U.S.-based corporations. Use an alternative — not one based in Russia, China, or the USA.
