@nshephard The first violation of privacy was how #Microsoft knew that I had a WhatsApp account that they could send the 2FA messages to. I didn't opt into anything; one day the text messages began coming as #WhatsApp instead.
I know that when you have a phone contact, the WhatsApp app can check if they have an account, but in this case, Microsoft must have run that query on a grand scale.

@bipolaron yes, use a separate phone with a separate phone number. WhatsApp has backdoors, so you can assume that your phone can be hacked by anyone. WhatsApp, if absolutely necessary, on a WhatsApp dedicated phone that doesn't contain your everything else.

Is #whatsapp safe to install and use?
I know it's owned by #meta so I assume absolutely not, but it seems to be the main way to talk to family in Chile.
Is there a way of using it that provides similar privacy as #signal ? Is just having the app installed going to leak piles of private information to Meta?
Wish I could trust internet searches to return factual results...
