By measuring Round-Trip Time (RTT) of #WhatsApp message delivery receipts, this tool can detect:
- When a user is actively using their device (low RTT)
- When the device is in standby/idle mode (higher RTT)
- Potential location changes (mobile data vs. WiFi)
- Activity patterns over time
Security implications: This demonstrates a significant privacy vulnerability in messaging apps that can be exploited for #surveillance

Un nuevo ataque llamado GhostPairing usa ingeniería social para tomar control total de cuentas de WhatsApp sin explotar fallos técnicos ni robar contraseñas.
Los atacantes engañan a la víctima con un falso sitio que solicita un código de emparejamiento de dispositivo, que el usuario acaba introduciendo creyendo que es legítimo.
Así el atacante obtiene acceso completo, invisible para el usuario.

I use #Signal with my family, and #WhatsApp to communicate with the rest of the world.
I know for some people it’s difficult to get friends and family to switch messaging apps (especially from #iMessage or WhatsApp) to something like Signal.
You prefer decentralized options?, yes, that might be better. But if it’s already hard to get people to switch to something familiar, imagine talking about self-hosting. I believe taking a step in the right direction is better than taking no step at all.

Der heise-Artikel und auch der PoC auf GitHub geben leider keine Auskunft darüber, was man bei Signal einstellen kann, um das Risiko zu minimieren. Wenn es die gleiche/ähnliche Einstellung wie bei WhatsApp ist, dürfte aber helfen: Einstellungen -> Datenschutz -> Unbekannte (Nummern) blockieren: Aktivieren.
