It's stupid to think that WhatsApp was designed in a way that it automatically download files into local storage. It's making it easy for people to spread malware only by sending files into the victim's phone.
Google Warns 2 Billion Android Users—Do Not Save Photos From WhatsApp. But seriously, it's not important anymore about who is warning who.
It's a hell of security risk.

Google first alerted Android users to this vulnerability in September. But now, Google Project Zero has made the WhatsApp Android vulnerability public because Meta failed to properly patch it within 90 days.
Pavel Durov on X: "You’d have to be braindead to believe WhatsApp is secure in 2026. When we analyzed how WhatsApp implemented its “encryption”, we found multiple attack vectors."

As they should. Meta is a serial data thief. It's also trying to build an AI model that's smarter than its boss (low threshold), but that means that, in addition to poaching other companies execs, it's also hunting for all sorts of conversational data. I very much doubt WhatsApp is the silo Meta claims it to be. But there's no solid evidence of that - yet.
