More about WhatApp's "encryption" lawsuit, originally reported by Bloomberg.

"The claim comes from plaintiffs from Australia, Brazil, India, Mexico, and South Africa. They say that Meta can still store, analyze, and access messages sent via WhatsApp, even though they should be private."

Meta says "any claim that people’s WhatsApp messages are not encrypted is categorically false and absurd.” But the lawsuit doesn't say the service isn't encrypted. It says Meta can access the messages anyway. These are two different things, and it's not unlikely that Meta can actually do that, especially in the new age of censorship, where people critical of war crimes are being silenced, most recently on TikTok, and for the purpose of making Meta's AI "smarter."

@evacide
Someone clarify me please 🤔

If e2ee happens from client to client, means a closed proprietary app like WhatsApp can use the decrypted messages at the client level & do can steal it even though the connection is marketed as e2ee

Am I right, or I'm missing out something?

Coz I see the option to send last 5 messages to meta when I report a spam and block the number.

So the e2ee is useless if the client is closed source right? 🤔

WhatsApp's end-to-end encryption is under fire again. A new lawsuit claims Meta staff can access messages. WhatsApp denies it, and some cryptographers are sceptical of the evidence so far. Either way, it's a great prompt to learn what E2EE covers (and what it doesn't).
