The big AI companies prefer that society trust them to innovate responsibly, and so they have been aggressively lobbying for federal protection from state and local regulations. President Donald Trump responded with a new executive order, “America’s AI Action Plan,” that threatens to financially punish states that try to regulate in ways he deems hinder innovation.
But technology experts say California urgently needs to regulate the AI industry that it’s incubating, drawing on hard lessons learned from delaying regulation of social media companies and the tobacco industry."
