Tecnicamente è una “influencer della malattia” perché pubblica video online per aiutare le persone ad ottenere sussidi di invalidità. Ma la brittanica 47enne Sara Middleton è stata travolta dalle polemiche perché accusata di “hackerare il sistema” quando in realtà sta “solo informando le persone”, come afferma.
Middleton, come riporta il Mirror, ha ricevuto la diagnosi di fibromialgia, un disturbo cronico caratterizzato da forti doloro, all’età di soli 17 anni. Poi le sono stati diagnosticati anche problemi alla colonna vertebrale causati dalla compressione nervosa, la sindrome da stanchezza cronica, la depressione, l’ansia e un’infiammazione del torace nota come costocondrite.
La donna ha iniziato a farsi conoscere su TikTok dopo aver pubblicato un video in cui si sfogava sulla riforma del welfare la scorsa primavera. Da allora, è diventata un’influencer nel campo delle malattie croniche, condividendo video a titolo informativo per le persone che hanno diritto al sussidio Personal Independence Payment (PIP) del governo.
Però Middleton ha affermato di essere stata accusata, di conseguenza, di aiutare le persone a “imbrogliare, truffare o hackerare il sistema” per ottenere sussidi non dovuti. Tuttavia, sostiene che “non è possibile truffare il sistema” perché è necessario fornire prove mediche. La donna si difende dicendo che sta istruendo le persone che hanno effettivamente diritto al sostegno su come comunicare la propria situazione e le proprie esigenze, e che i troll “non capiscono il sistema”.

Technically, she’s a “disease influencer” because she publishes videos online to help people obtain disability benefits. But the 47-year-old British Sara Middleton was overwhelmed by controversy after being accused of “hacking the system” when she’s actually “just informing people,” as she claims.
Middleton, as reported by the Mirror, received a diagnosis of fibromyalgia, a chronic disorder characterized by severe pain, at the age of 17. She was later diagnosed with spinal problems caused by nerve compression, chronic fatigue syndrome, depression, anxiety, and chest inflammation known as costochondritis.
The woman began to gain recognition on TikTok after posting a video in which she vented about the welfare reform last spring. Since then, she has become an influencer in the field of chronic illnesses, sharing informational videos for people who are eligible for the government’s Personal Independence Payment (PIP) benefit.
However, Middleton has stated that she was consequently accused of helping people to “cheat, defraud, or hack the system” to obtain undeserved benefits. Nevertheless, she argues that “it’s impossible to cheat the system” because medical evidence must be provided. The woman defends herself by saying she’s instructing people who actually have a right to support on how to communicate their situation and needs, and that the “trolls” “don’t understand the system.”
“I want to educate, defend, and empower,” she concluded. “I want people to be confident and have a fair chance. But nothing I could say to someone would definitely guarantee a good outcome with the intended benefit: it all depends on the medical evidence.”
