If you have a #homeserver with public #SSH access, just changing the default port from 22 to another port reduces bot attacks by 99%. I tested it by monitoring fail2ban logs, and from 100s of attacks per day on the default port number, it dropped to 0 with a non-default port.

So change the port number, set up basic #ban2fail, and disable password login and you will be fine against most automated attacks.

And I have another #ssh key #randomart creature - this time #bumblebee 🐝 FLOOF!
More round here and there than I saw/felt in that terminal.

I wonder if synesthesia makes it easier to find all these pictures in ssh keys...

Content warning:Article: Run your own WireGuard VPN

I stopped paying for VPN services a decade ago and I haven't looked back. When I 'need' a VPN service, I just spin one up on cheap VM services, and then I throw it away when I'm done. It's cheaper and more-customisable... and if the UK goes ahead with an idea to age-gate VPN services, it might soon become more-convenient too.

On a @debian 13 machine, I stumbled on a reload error on the #SSH service when an #Ansible task failed.

As I could not reproduce this interesting problem on previous #Debian releases, I reported the (likely?) bug.

The Ansible task itself could be adjusted to restart the service instead of reload. A workaround - but works.

Details in my #blog .
