Mastodon, for the most part. It's no secret that the Mastodon Network™ have segregated themselves off from the last of the Fediverse through spotty discoverability and unified blocklists. The natural consequence of that is they've built themselves a spacious echo chamber consisting mostly of liberal and progressive-minded people.

In part due to the Twitter exodus and the platform predominantly being made up of free and open source enthusiasts. Consequentially, you'll occasionally see reports from Mastodon instances listed as @admin@instance.tld that include no context with the report or have flagged a post that we cannot act upon as per the guidelines of our instance and even sometimes their own. Such has been the case for us with Fosstodon, though their admin @fosstodon@fosstodon.org were rather chill in our communication.

I've personally found that a lot of online communities tend to have rather broad and opaque rules that are often left up to interpretation. That way, anyone can justify their actions as being in accordance with the spirit of the rule and get away with a lot of abusive stuff in the process. I suspect between that and the tendency of people to rely on moderation to curate their online experience rather than exercising their ability to mute and block may have given way to a culture of vibe-based reporting. Where anything that may not sit right with a person is free game for reporting.

Something I believe may be warrant discussion is how each instance is beholden to the rules of another by virtue of federation. Something that has given way to vibes-based reporting which our administrator has been unable to act on.

This has, unfortunately, resulted in the slander of our instance. Branded as allegedly being "anti-moderation" and "bigoted" for choosing not to punish their users over frivolous reports or engage in the fediblock of the more fringe or controversial instances on here ourselves.

So Fedizens, what are your thoughts?

#socialmedia Sagt mal, was ist eigentlich "social media"? Darf zukünftigt eine Zwölfjährige noch über github open source Software herunterladen? "Issues" schreiben? Bei Stackoverflow Fragen stellen? Sie gar beantworten?

Social Media & the TDG

Social media is having an effect on our elections.

The popular solution is to regulate it. But the owners of social media find ways around regulations--if they don't outright ignore the rules.

Maybe we should build a democracy that social media has no effect on the ballot box:

My account suspended. Their e-mail says it has been suspended for 3 days. That I will be able to access my account again on 24th Feb 2026.

I only wonder if my account will be fully functional after the suspension or not.
