(I know this is kind of long, but bear with me. I had to get it out of my mind while it's there!) 😀

The social media verdict, which finally held Meta and YouTube accountable, means we could see a big shift away from the mainstream platforms. I hope this revives the internet's independence, where people created their own ways to connect with each other. And real-world fun will be back in style!

The early internet stood for freedom: it changed the world and brought people together in ways that weren't possible before. And we can still bring that back and do our own thing! We can build our own sites, share our own docs, and connect that with the real world. We have the tools: it's about how we use them. What's keeping us from building our own PDFs and sharing zines instead of relying on Facebook for marketing? There are so many creative possibilities once we think outside the box. ⚡

This is what I'm trying to do with art. I've got to use the internet sometimes to spread the word, but after that I try to find the in-person ways I can connect and get things going. I hope to do more of that this year!

Build community and find your people. Use the internet as the tool to share your vision and get things started, but then bring that offline into the real world.

The true cost of social media verification.

Tl;dr the data broker industry is absolutely fucking terrifying, and social media identity verification is a cancer, even if some (some) of the issues it’s in reaction to are real.

Also, friendly reminder: The internet’s first “identity verification service”? HTTPS.

Yeah. How’d that fucking work out, hey.

RE: mastodon.social/@leavex/116312

Have you ever thought about how ridiculous all this discussion about banning social media is? What about sharing our IDs with Big Tech? I have, and I'm sure many others have as well.

But why can't our decision makers enforce companies to stop draining people's attention, causing political division, facilitating child abuse, and harming minorities while making the richest people in the world richer at our expense?

Not only that, we already have alternatives that work pretty well and could be funded to work even better.

Why are decision makers hostages to such criminal organizations? Because that's what they are: criminals. The only punishment thus far has been fines that are ridiculously low compared to their profits. And that has to come to an end!
