Drivers warned TikTok ‘car wash trend’ could lead to £2,000 repair bills
The trend, set to a sped‑up version of Ellie Goulding’s hit Lights, sees people — sometimes in groups — dancing, pressure‑washing and even climbing on their cars as part of choreographed videos.
But Scrap Car Comparison says the stunts could cause serious damage. Standing or dancing on bonnets and roofs risks dents, scratches and cracked panels, with repairs costing from £150 to over £1,000.

Customer Service Manager Matt Clamp warned that powerful pressure washers can break fragile parts such as windscreen wipers, mirrors and trims, and even strip paint or chrome.
Some videos also promote DIY cleaning “hacks” using vinegar, coconut oil or household detergents — mixtures that can corrode protective clear coats, dull paintwork and strip wax layers. Minor swirl marks could cost up to £300 to fix, while respraying multiple panels could run to £2,000.
The experts also raised environmental concerns, saying the trend wastes water — often during hosepipe bans — and ineffective cleaning means cars may need to be washed again.
Matt Clamp added:
“The intention of the videos is not to thoroughly clean your car, but to make a fun and entertaining visual for the internet to see. Unfortunately, that fun could come at a high price for your car and your wallet.”
Drivers are being urged to stick to safe, proper car‑cleaning methods.
