Why is social media so toxic? The "living on the edge" of what is allowed is exhilarating and guarantees a large audience. Before the Internet you had to climb a large tree or shoplift or do an illegal car race to get your adrenaline pumping and the administration of a large crowd, if successful.
Today if you say something borderline online anything can happen: do you get fired?, do you get celebrated?, does some celebrity or politician reacts to you positive or negative? Any of these things can happen. The thrill is real. The attention you receive can change your life and if you are successful and get away with it, you will try to reproduce the thrill again. It is constant rage optimization for the adrenaline rush.

People argue that social media doesn’t depress them because they’re never comparing themselves to “perfect” people. Well guess what? It still destroys you. Im not talking about sites like Mastodon, but anything centralized/algorithmic. Oh, and we also have people addicted to “brainrot.” This is a serious problem, teenagers watching content lower than a show made for three year olds. WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK. If you know anyone who still uses these sites, MAKE THEM STOP.

Quit algorithmic social media. If there’s anyone here who still uses centralized/algorithmic social media, STOP. There is so much evidence that implies that it destroys your mental health, sleep, focus, and handfuls of other things.
