Two Things New Social Platforms Must Get Right From Launch

I’m seeing a lot of new regional social networks popping up in response to the capitulation of US tech companies to the Trump administration, and even in some cases a determination to have networks beholden only to the laws of their own country.

Of course, this isn’t the only reason they’re popping up: the US-centric nature of social media, especially with many American users being the loudest on platforms while also being blissfully unaware that they are far, far from the majority of users.

We’ve gone from ‘there are no girls on the internet” to “everybody is American by default”. Weird.

People want networks that match their identity, not an identity that is exported or imposed by another country.

It’s funny how we are getting back to a similar mindset to what we had in 2007 when we were launching Bloomer – our regional (although we called it a hyper-local) social network.

Anywho, as an early adopter of practically every social network since the days when we dialled in to bulletin boards, I’m dropping two quick pearls of wisdom for user adoption.

Make it as easy as possible to sign up, sign in, and keep me signed in.

I was playing with Eh! (a new Canadian social network – app only), which requires only a phone number to sign in, but I very quickly grew annoyed at being forced to sign in multiple times a day.

Every single time you make a user jump through the hoop of logging in is a massive barrier to engagement and adoption. If a user can’t simply share something from their phone without signing in, then 99% of the time, they’re not sharing it. The same goes for notifications – they don’t happen, so the user can’t engage if they’re signed out.

You can see where this is going – if I can’t share posts or receive notifications without signing in, then I’m not going to engage with your app, and soon enough it will be consigned to the digital trash can.

Then nobody will see the cutest picture ever of my cat eating my tuna sandwich – well, nobody except for my friends on other social networks.

Serious creators use the web to post – not apps.

You need a web interface, even if it’s just MVP (minimum viable product), and you need it early if you wish to foster user adoption.

There are two types of social network users: those who create content and those who consume it. The vast majority of social users are hungry hungry hippos consumers, their appetites satiated by the output of content creators and power users.

It’s the power users who drive actual engagement and keep everyone else coming back.

I grant you that the vast majority of users access their social networks via the apps on their phones or tablets, but power users and content creators primarily use their laptops or PCs.

Creators that drive engagement are usually active on more than one platform, and they typically have a workflow that isn’t easily accomplished on a mobile device.

Creators write their posts, tweak their images, edit their videos and more on desktop, and then post to the web.

When I create a video for my podcast, I make a minimum of 3 different sizes as required by various networks.

Even excluding the time it takes to make and record the podcast, formatting and exporting those videos takes a fair amount of time, and it would take many times longer to do it on a phone with its slower processors and graphics capabilities.

These different versions of the video must then be posted to all of the platforms. I’m sure as heck not doing that from my phone. Jumping from one app to another would take forever, and on a desktop, I can automate some of the process.

It’s also far easier to set up dashboards or have multiple tabs open on a laptop or desktop computer to keep track of and interact with comments on multiple platforms.

As the builders and designers of new platforms, I’m guessing that some of you may be idealists and think: “If a creator doesn’t want to go to the effort to post on our platform, then we don’t need them”.

You’re entitled to think that, but you’d be wrong and consigning yourself to obscurity, just like many of the sites on the non-exhaustive Wikipedia list of defunct social networks.

That being said, here’s a photo of me from 2016 in an Imzy shirt.

Imzy (which isn’t on the list) was a Reddit alternative led by former Reddit Product Chief Dan McComas.

Billed as a friendlier alternative to Reddit, it launched in 2016 and unfortunately shuttered in May 2017.

I’ve been around.
