Probably when reading the word “CAFE,” most people think of the dark drink that is usually consumed from a cup. However, at the core of fascist discourse on social media, it has a very different meaning. These letters, in Spanish, are actually read as “Camarada Arriba Falange Española” (Comrade Up Spanish Falange), a slogan used that meant the enemy had to be killed. There are other terms used to refer to Adolf Hitler (like the “Austrian painter“), Benito Mussolini (“the big jaw”) and others to support Nazism and deny the Holocaust. Coded terms are just one of the strategies used by users who share these contents to avoid platform restrictions and spread their message. In addition, we can find memes, used to spread extremist ideas disguised as humor and reach a younger audience.
These types of tactics are challenging for platforms. Academic evidence and experts consulted by Maldita.es and Facta recognize that this type of content is difficult to identify and moderate for the social networks on which it is spread. Some of the experts’ recommendations include training artificial intelligence processes to detect inappropriate content more automatically or including links to external pages with reliable information that users can verify. Others, such as UNESCO, are also committed to educating teachers and students about the consequences of these regimes, as well as warning against the use of social media to make demands and proclaim slogans in coded language."

"The Nostalgia Factory: How Social Media Shapes the Myth of Authoritarian Regimes
In Italy and Spain, viral content is circulating that seeks to glorify the policies of the fascist regimes of Mussolini and Franco
'We used to live better under Franco' or 'When he (Mussolini) was around, things were better' are the most commonly used narratives about Franco, Mussolini and their dictatorship, according to the content analyzed by Maldita.es and Facta. This discourse, which presents both regimes as a time of greater security, material well-being, and stability compared to the current democratic era, circulates widely on social media. To convey this narrative, the content relies on a series of elements such as disinformation content, appealing to the experiences of older people, the recurrent use of direct comparisons with the present, the introduction of numerical data without any context as evidence of credibility, and the use of memes that condense the message. Although sometimes adopts an ironic or humorous tone, this narrative could have a real impact by framing these dictatorships as times of order, prosperity and security, it fuels nostalgia for authoritarian regimes and casts doubt on democracy today.
With the rise of social media, myths and false narratives have found new forms and vast alternative spaces in which to circulate and reach younger generations as well. It is therefore important to debunk these propagandistic lies, not only out of respect for historical truth."

Went down the lawncare rabbit hole on Instagram as I prep my yard for winter.
A few taps in and my entire suggested content has changed from instagram ho's shakin ass to actual hoe tools, rakes and mowers.
