The fragmentation of the internet and our hobby

So I struggled at first on where to post this (which of my many blogs) and in what language.

The story is universal but for me it focuses on the hobby and most of my hobby is living in the English speaking part. So I’ll try to make my thought readable here.

What do I mean with „the fragmentation of the internet“? Some of the younger audience might not know but before there was Facebook, YouTube and TikTok fellow hobbyist had other ways of sharing info, talking about game and letting people see the stuff they made.

There where usenet groups. Pure text format only (for the most part) and where some kind of hybrid of online and offline in a time where internet access was billed by the minute. Fire up your news reader, dial in, download all new posts and go offline again. Then you can take your time, read all the posts and (if you want) reply. Go online again, send all posts and go offline again. Rinse and repeat. Slow? Yes. Bad? No! You really had time to think about your writing.

Next came personal blogs and webrings. Webring was a thing of „I put your link on my page and you do the same on yours“ With a bit of tech in the background making it possible to have a number of websites in a webring. Think of it a bit like a blogroll.

For me, the biggest and best way to connect to people where forums. They usually had a theme or a certain group of people in mind and all topic related to them. Moderation was easy (if you had a good team) and in general „life was good“. Later forums would even let you share pictures of your work and companies in our hobby would set up their own forums so that you would be with many like minded people.

Then MySpace and Facebook came and very quickly people went on social media to share all their stuff there. And it wasn’t bad at the beginning. Fast forward to 2025. Almost no company in our hobby has a forum any more. With few exceptions like North Star Miniatures but those are rare. They all rely on facebook groups and pages. Some have started to use discord as well but both require a dedicated account (forums did so too, yes, but most of the time you could read as guests) and good luck trying to find old stuff you’ve written or read and want to read again. The „Algorithm“ is so horribly optimised that you don’t find anything ever again.

And yes, I was/am still on facepage because of the few companies (mostly smaller ones) that will share new stuff and have discussions only there.

And I know I’m preaching to the choir here but I really wish forums would come back. In one form or another.

What I have planned for the near future is to find a forum (that’s alive) for every game/company in out hobby that I’m currently only reading on facepage and try to make an impact there through participation.
