I want a system that allows users to prove, using a public/private key pair and nothing else, that they really are who they claim to be online, and to create a web of trust with each other, etc.  "Users" in this case includes me because I would definitely use that.  The two examples I gave, or something close enough, already exist but apart from each other; Keyoxide is the former and the latter is (or was, and I'm not sure which) a project by FUTO called Harbor.  I want all of that in one.  I also want a feature I would probably never use myself, although I still think it should exist because other people would use it, and I think it should exist on principle anyway: you should, ideally, be able to cryptographically prove your real world identity online and vice versa.  That system doesn't already exist AFAIK (and if I'm wrong, please tell me what it's called).  I, personally, have no desire to start using my government name, either here or on any kind af social media anywhere.  However, that is a thing some people do and it apparently makes sense in their case.  So those people should be able to prove that without uploading any official documents, if they want.  People should be able to prove their own claims, create a web of trust with each other, and prove their real world identity if they want to.  People should be able to do that cryptographically, without requiring anything other than said keys—and they should be able to do all of that in the same place and easily.  If we could get to that point, more and more people would do exactly that, and the Internet would change for the better.

As I say, I agree that there are nasty issues with lies, bullying, manipulation, greed, and other unsavoury behaviours coming at kids via 'social media'.

The current solution is a problem.

Hello, I'm @daniel and here's my #introduction from my new #selfhosted Mastodon instance.

I write and get easily distracted.

I know, we ought to perform, so I write poems inconsistently.

We are taught to fixate on meanings, to err is to fail, going astray and also to keep moving. Precision, as life keeps reminding us, is not finite: trees keep weaving dirt and water hounds every crack.

The innocence around #socialmedia is gone, but not so the need to share & connect.

P.S. Se habla español.

"TikTok, Instagram and YouTube need to take more responsibility for the algorithms that direct young users toward harmful content but banning teens from using social media wouldn't solve this problem, [Andrew Flood] says.

'If we haven't taught young people critical media literacy skills in assessing content and negotiating their lives online, then they're going to be in trouble'."

Trigger Warnings Aren’t Weakness

Content warnings help people prepare, not avoid reality. Respecting them is basic care.
