‘It’s not too late to fix it’: web inventor #TimBernersLee says he is in a ‘battle for the soul’ of the #internet
Founder of #worldwideweb says commercialisation means net is ‘optimised for nastiness’, but collaboration and compassion can prevail
It wasn't until polarization of 2016 election that he had enough with Web's toxicity, something that reportedly left him "devastated." He acknowledges #socialmedia does not represent entire web, but is "optimized for nastiness"

The trouble with most musicians today is that they are copycats. Of course you have to start out playing like someone else. You have a model, or a teacher, and you learn all that he can show you. But then you start playing for yourself.

Try, if you can, not to get played by American kkkapitalism
________

USA 2008: Bailed out the banks. Foreclosed the people. Turned owners into renters

China 2025: Let prices fall. Kept people in their homes. 90% home ownership

One of these is a crisis

It's not the one they're telling you

Last night I had the pleasure of chatting to Clare McDonnell on @BBC5Live's Drive programme about TikTok censorship and speed throttling concerns from US users of the app, amidst the transfer of TikTok's infrascructure to Oracle's US-based data centres 🎙️

Listen from 2:16:46 🎧: bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m002qjfb

My main points:

📱Yes, I suspect it is very likely TikTok is self-censoring by getting certain controversal hashtags to appear a bit less frequently on their app. They almost got banned from the US entirely and the phrases "ICE" and "Epstein Files" are triggering and divisive right now to all sides of American society.

📱No, I do not think TikTok is deliberately throttling the traffic going to US users. Always remember that IT infrastructure, and many things in tech and engineering, are fraught with problems. Even if you test and prepare prior to a live network switch-over of infrastructure, something can still break! Remember the TSB bank outage😉

📱However, social media giants don't just do what governments want them to do. They have *ways* of handling overreaching content censorship requests...
