Here's a polymorphic <Link> component, written in under 30 lines of code, that automatically detects whether it's external and, if so, adds the appropriate rel and target attributes. Otherwise, it assumes the link is to some route in your SPA and uses history.pushState() accordingly.
This implementation is written for Preact+htm, but you could easily port it to React.
Usage: just like an <a> element, but with "to" instead of "href".
