@plaetzchen I went through this. The problem is that #zigbee unavailable status is a symptom, like having a fever. And, like a fever, it shows up with so many underlying causes that it can be nearly impossible to diagnose without other symptoms.
For example, when I add or remove repeater devices, the mesh gets unstable for a few days and I sometimes have to wake devices up or re-pair them during that time. And then they get stable and everything is ok.
I had another issue where a large number of database writes was slowing down the #raspberrypi 4 #homeassistant server enough to cause the Zigbee controller to go offline and reset, causing all devices to go offline for a couple of minutes.
And all of this was after I carefully chose my channel and the channels I use for my wifi APs to minimize interference.

@nora I'd say Mint for ease, and Ubuntu (not that hard with all the help articles) for heavy lifting.
Certainly a good way to breath life into older hardwear.
On a related note, for my main desktop I've migrated from a tired Mini Mac to a #raspberryPi at something like a fifth of the cost. I'm more database geek, not gamer, and it's doing really well.
