In the early 1990s, Perl 4 was great for the time.

I found that I was able to prototype a disk BIOS in Perl 4 in a fraction of the time that the work required in 'C' and then translate Perl 4 to 'C'.

After that, I was able to whip up a netlist generator in Perl 4 with little effort. Subsequently, I moved as much of my development work to Perl as possible and never looked back.

Of course, Perl 5, with initial release in 1994, was a big step forward.

This was 6 years before the initial release of #Python 2 in 2000. In theory, Perl 5 should have owned the next-generation language space by the time that Python 2 showed up. In practice, the decision to treat Perl 6 essentially as a new language allowed Python 2 to eat Perl 5's lunch [though there were other factors].

#Perl 5 ended up as a nearly deprecated language. It's been my language of choice for 30 years now regardless.

Content warning:AOC Day 6 Chatter

I just completed "Trash Compactor" - Day 6 - Advent of Code 2025. Was too busy to keep on schedule yesterday, trying to catch up now. This one was a little more complicated, but mostly in rotating the numbers into 'Cephalopod format'.

@guix is about to release 1.5.0!

Python team is working on bringing NumPy stack backed with v2.
There is some tension between v1 and v2 having in profile at the same time so plan is make python-numpy default on v2.

Please check your profiles and report
