Hoo boy. Naivete at it's most pure is a thing to behold.

A few days ago #unl announced they're closing the #statistics department, among others, along with our BS, MS, and PhD programs (the BS is only 3 years old). budgetprocess.unl.edu/proposed

They have a public comment form apc.unl.edu/fall-2025-budget-r that you can use to explain exactly how silly it is to close an overall profitable program in an age of #ai and #bigdata.

Also, if your university is hiring a #datavis statistician to teach #statcomputing and #rstats and #python, let me know!

Today's blog article is about using EZSheets in Python. I'm learning as I write about Python and I still find myself clunking around so take that in mind when reading :)

by thinking a typing error in be fixed by casting an int into bytes using bytes(int), not realising the function actually returns a byte object of size int. This caused my console to vomit out an eight-million-long sequence of bytes, which I did *not* expect, and accidentally closed the console window without killing the terminal.

I actually did this twice because I forgot to save the file after I removed it, causing the PTY host to crash.

Going Underground: China-aligned TA415 Conducts U.S.-China Economic Relations Targeting Using VS Code Remote Tunnels

Throughout July and August 2025, TA415, a Chinese state-sponsored threat actor, conducted spearphishing campaigns targeting U.S. government, think tank, and academic organizations focused on U.S.-China relations. The group impersonated high-profile individuals and organizations to deliver an infection chain establishing Visual Studio Code Remote Tunnels for persistent remote access. This activity, likely aimed at gathering intelligence on U.S.-China economic ties, utilized legitimate services like Google Sheets and VS Code for command and control. TA415 employed a Python loader called WhirlCoil to set up the remote tunnels and exfiltrate system information. The targeting pattern and timing suggest evolving priorities shaped by the complex U.S.-China economic relationship.
