One of my tasks at work is to visualize various #CAD models, from single equipment models up full-scale mills. Now the mills are a right bastard, because the only way to get something I can use in #blender is to export the model from Navisworks into FBX and then import that. Which is kind of fine, except Blender doesn't like deep tree hierarchies with tens of thousands of objects all that much. The latest Blender versions have a new FBX importer which is significantly faster than the old one, but still the issue with excessively large models remains.
So I decided to set out to develop a batch #python script that I can run from the command line using Blender's own Python environment that loads the model files into Blender in the background, performs several functions (merge meshes under certain hierarchy level into a single mesh, merge duplicate materials, etc) on them and saves the result.
The aim is that once I've prepared the FBX files by exporting the relevant model object branches from Navisworks, I can just run the script and go home, and return to work the next day and hopefully the script has finished and I have a relatively lightweight and clean model for further processing. If interested, stay tuned - once it's in a relatively stable condition that doesn't break too much, I'll publish it on Codeberg.

Updating libraries to work with the new version can be a complex and time consuming process. And the vast majority of these libraries are maintained by unpaid volunteers.
