As an example:
The left image is the original in 9:16 format (the white frame is just a placeholder). The right image shows the #Pixelfed screen for creating a story post, where the image is loaded cropped at the top and bottom (approximately 2:3 aspect ratio), and the overlay for cropping it back to 9:16.

The main reason I don't use #Pixelfed Stories is that images already in 9:16 get cropped and then scaled again to fit the same aspect ratio, resulting in unnecessary loss of image content.
