hey look, there's special purpose language zephir for building native php extensions https://zephir-lang.com
i'm a man of simple desires and all i wanted is this: run zephir compiler on one file, get .so library and inspect quality of generated code
to achieve this i needed to do following steps:
- git pull
- composer install
- install native extension via pecl
- globally enable said extension
- create a project
- let zephir generate loads of directories and files
- zephir compiler translates my code into more C files
- php build system shits out even more files
- and when you run install to get actual .so, the whole thing break, complaining about nonexistent header files

i don't want to toot my own horn too much, but my little phpmod.d tool https://github.com/kaja47/phpmod.d works like this:
- create a file for my extension
- get phpmod.d library
- run gdc compiler with those two files
- done
php build system is such a miserable nightmare and slapping more crap on top of it make it even more hostile
