Each time people I know run popular podcasts or video channels moan about #YouTube arbitrary policies (e.g. demonetisation when you say “war” or “suicide” or arbitrary channel suspension) I always tell them: try PeerTube.
The usual response, which I interpret as mostly driven by learned helplessness (with large help from YT & friends), is “but there’s no money on PeerTube” But isn’t there, really?
- I’m no media expert, but the YT monetisation model funded through platform ads doesn’t really seem work for most people trying except those with millions of views. People with YT channels I know complain all the time about low earnings, further hindered by YT arbitrary policies of demonetisation (try mentioning “war” or “suicide”), channel suspensions etc. This is the only thing that doesn’t work in PeerTube model 🟥 (theoretically nobody prevents you from displaying ads on your PeerTube instance but it’s kind of inconsistent with the idea of federation)
- Most channels/podcasts I personally watch switched to direct donations through Patronite etc. How these work? On your channel you simply say “folks, please support me here and here, you’ll find the link in description” ✅
- Many channels acquire good old direct advertising contracts and say the simplest possible thing on their video: “this channel is sponsored by company X, we recommend their gadget, referral link is here”. ✅
The bottom line is, anything burned in the video can be distributed on PeerTube, including federation. Your “channel is sponsored by company X” will sounds exactly the same viewed on PeerTube instances tube.pol.social or video.mendoresist.org or whatever other with global federation enabled, and even when viewed through Mastodon or Akkoma instance.
The benefit is that nobody will “demonetise” you if you mention “war”, “suicide” or a competing brand simply because you want. The former I’m highlighting especially because there’s a certain irony in those YouTube military experts who try to deliver an analysis of the front line situation without mentioning words like “war” or “casualties” 🤦
Some people also rely on YouTube to drive traffic from new viewers and this is where I agree on PeerTube you won’t get much because it’s game of statistics. However, if you already run YouTube channel or popular social media profile, you can drive your viewers towards your #PeerTube easily, especially when you explain why you’re doing it - to prevent arbitrary suspensions and demonetisations.

Fedihost.co hasn't updated my instance to 8.0 yet. Hopefully they'll do that this weekend. Maybe that will fix the chat plugins issues.
