David Steele archived the pgBackRest GitHub repo on April 27 after Snowflake bought Crunchy Data. His funded maintainer slot evaporated. pgBackRest backs up production Postgres-on-Linux at thousands of shops. Operator sponsorship fell short of one full-time salary. Hacker News filled with offers to chip in, after the archive went up. Open-sourcing one funded engineer is a corporate dependency. It survives exactly one acquisition.
