The #Blender situation is fascinating. Bradley highlights an important aspect of what's going on.

I think there is wide misunderstanding in how money has influence over #openSource projects. Make no mistake, given the source of the money here, people are rightfully concerned.

However, there is typically (but not always) good firewalls between money and governance (i.e. engineering).

It's possible to not take money at all (see #Valkey) but it's not easy to get lots of things done.

W3C is very pleased to announce that the @sovtechfund has launched a pilot program to support independent #OpenSource maintainers participation in the work of our groups, including training, mentoring, and financial support to make sustained engagement possible. It is really wonderful to see efforts from donors to recognize the role that open standards play.

The call for applications is open until 19 May.

The Fedora Project shipped Fedora 44 on April 28 with the first major-distro reproducible-builds policy at default. Floor 99 percent, bugs filed when packages fail. Reproducible builds means anyone with the source can rebuild a binary and prove it matches byte for byte. That defends against the pipeline compromises behind Bitwarden CLI, Checkmarx, and elementary-data this year. The policy answers every Q1 supply-chain story.

I’m tired of Verizon’s customer service, but is the grass any greener on the other side?

Verizon has a reputation for less than great customer service, but all the big carriers have seen a decline here.

The Dutch government has soft-launched code.overheid.nl, a government-wide open-source code platform built on Forgejo. 🇳🇱

This is a massive win for digital sovereignty, proving that large public institutions can successfully deploy sovereign infrastructure and move away from proprietary GitHub or GitLab lock-in.
