You know what I love?
First of all, I love ChatGPT for helping me figure things out. But even more, I love self-hosting and I love using Linux. Why? Because it challenges me. It makes my brain want to tinker, to push, to solve.
This evening I ran into trouble trying to log into my Microsoft account for Gears of War: Reloaded. My mate is on Xbox, I’m on Steam, and I wanted to play together. Easy in theory. Not so easy on Linux.
Hours of tinkering later, with the help of ChatGPT and the trusty Linux terminal (seriously, that thing tells you everything if you’re willing to dig), I finally got somewhere. The problem boiled down to Microsoft’s WebView2, which I had to run through Wine. That finally let the login window load.
At first, it was a nightmare, I couldn’t type into the boxes. Then I realised: tab across, paste email, tab again, type password. Sorted. But I still couldn’t hit “Let’s play.” Turns out the window needed to be resized. Once I made it bigger, everything inside expanded, and suddenly the “Let’s go” button worked… after moving the window around a bit in-game, of course.
Frustrating? Definitely. Worth it? Absolutely. That moment when the game finally launched, pure satisfaction. It’s late (2am here in the UK). I’ve been at this since 8:30pm. But now I can play Gears of War Reloaded with my friends.
Here’s the thing: gaming on Linux has come a long way, but it still needs serious work. Right now, it’s mostly Valve’s Proton that makes it viable, with a lot of tinkering on top. Microsoft, in my view, is slipping. More and more people are moving to Linux or macOS. Macs are great for creativity, but Linux could (and should) be a true gaming powerhouse, if the rough edges got smoothed out.
For now, I’m just happy I got it working. Challenges like these are why I love Linux. The frustration, the problem-solving, the eventual win. That’s the spirit of tinkering.
Now it’s time for some well-earned Gears of War with the crew. 🔥🎮
