The most recent episode of "Explaining Computers" shows off several distros, which run decently well, with even as low as 4GB of RAM. He even showed a couple of old corncob codger machines (remember the 32-bit, 1-CPU core Asus EeePC"?) which could scrape by with 2GB, and 1GB of RAM respectively, with the right distro installed.
I must admit it gave me nerd joy to watch him go as lightweight as possible for his general audience - he stuck to the most convenient distros he could find, the whole time.
Barnatt had his finger on the pulse of making do with little RAM.
