I'm looking back on my life. When I was younger during the 1998-2005 period, I fervently believed in the virtues and promises of #OpenSource. For something to be virtuous means that it has moral excellence and righteousness or goodness. Some of us in the software field were progressive enough that we thought certain components of software; specifically agentic systems, would replace many human endeavors.

Fast forward to today: 2026. How wrong we were about certain developments in computer science. I'm not talking about the continued development of ai. I'm referring to the almost total lack of human ingenuity with getting around what I call the greedy stupid puzzle or the "too many billionaires problem."

Some of us thought that tedious work would be replaced by robots. Some of us went further and suggested that components embedded in agentic systems would greatly help with tasks such as remembering the true priority of phone messages, and better organizing callbacks and times to accept incoming calls within the time frame that the user sets and not the phone carrier. We have not reached this point yet. It's not that the carriers won't *let* us. It's that Android and iOS software isn't that "smart" yet.

There were two types of men in our camp. My kind of people gravitated towards programmers such as Jamie #Zawinski — who was someone that actually worked to make Netscape and Mozilla what it is today. Zawinski and others under Marc Andreessen did the actual work to make Mozilla Firefox happen. People such as Andreessen took most of the money from those ventures and most of the credit, too. I'm not interested in debating specifics over who did what because I wasn't there. I'm simply falling back to a general state of reasoning over how I feel about the encroachment of billionaires.

Marc Andreessen is worth north of $1.5 billion dollars, an unbelievably large sum of money for one person. Andreessen's Trump-supporting partner, Ben Horowitz, is personally worth approximately the same. Both men have donated vast sums of money to the Trump Regime.

AI agent designs a complete RISC-V CPU from a 219-word spec sheet in just 12 hours — comparably simple design required 'many tens of billions of tokens'

obviously some "business people" try to steal open source code and try to take possession of it in a "legal" way: by running it through ai and "recreating" it without all the opensource stuff like GPL and such attached. so they think they can sell it, license it however they want without this GPL commons impediment.

as @Cory Doctorow puts it in this article:

This is the risk that Nolan and his partner are trying to awaken the free/open source community to: that our commons is about to be raided by selfish monsters who serve as gut-flora for the immortal colony organisms we call "limited liability corporations," who will steal everything we've built and destroy the social contract we live by.

gut flora and immortal colony organisms ... i seriously doubt that any german politician would ever understand this meaning ... :-)

@Cory Doctorow even shows a way out, one that the colony organisms most probably didn't think of:  no copyright for ai generated stuff, neither books, nor pictures, nor music nor code.

the principle that copyright is strictly reserved for human creativity isn't remotely controversial in legal circles. This is just how copyright works.

Which means that the "be evil" version of Malus's business model has a fatal flaw. While the code that Malus produces is indeed "legally distinct" with "no attribution" and "no copyleft," it's not true that there are "no problems." That's because Malus's code doesn't have "corporate-friendly licensing." Far from it: Malus's code has no licensing, because it is born in the public domain and cannot be copyrighted.

this means:

If you give me code that Malus produced, you can't stop me from doing anything I want with it. I can sell it. I can give it away. I can make a competing product that reproduces all of your code and sell it at a 99% discount.

let just hope doctorow is right with his assessment.
