#Challenge

My #Mastodon instance has a 5000 character limit. Who can find me a text from anywhere in the #Fediverse breaking this limit?

I know, that #Friendica and #Hubzilla have theoretically no character limit. But what's the point of bragging about it, when nobody is actually using it?

#Sharkey - as i think all #Misskey forks do - is limited to 3000 characters. Still, more than 99% of the Fediverse really is using.

And please, take a real single posting at least a couple of days old, not some crappy merged text to prove me wrong.

Boosts welcome. 🔄

This Moriarty fellow hijacked the Federation flagship just to secure a happily-ever-after with his Countess? Now that's romance, darlings! Most men won't even ask for directions, let alone seize a starship for love. # ShipInABottle

Thinking about this, multi-item polls probably have lots of challenges but one is maintaining associations while preserving privacy. If you want to see the average age (assuming there was a numerical response question type) of North American vs EverywhereElse users, you have to connect each respondent's age response with their geographical location response.

This has been solved a variety of ways online, but it's a challenge and it's work. You could just say "it's public! Of course you can be identified!" But I don't like that at all. Right now (at least with my API access) I can't see who answered which option on a poll. I don't want that. In fact, I'd like to have the option to not even know who answered: true anonymity.

If we do that, then for multi-item polls there probably has to be some radomesque ID value assigned to each poll respondent. Not being a web codey folk, I'm guessing that ID value would have to persist with the user while they interacted with the poll. Then there would have to be some disconnection of that ID value from the poll respondent's real ID. IDK, maybe the respondent ID gets scrapped when they finish the poll or abandon it for 10 minutes, and their data goes into some data structure that doesn't require an ID column/element (e.g., a CSV file and they just get a row). Or maybe the ID stays around but is either never associated with the user (IDK if that's possible?) or gets un-associated later.

Anyway. I don't know how to do this but lots of other people do.

In this blessed month, I appeal for your help to provide breakfast and suhoor for my children. I don’t ask for variety, just to fill their hungry little stomachs before and after fasting. Any donation, no matter how small, brings them hope and comfort.

Since I occasionally get followers with clearly very new accounts I should probably put out some advice for the newbies here:

Fedi[1] is an
amazing platform and I really love it, but beware that it is achieves that greatness by being not like most other social media; you won’t get followers by just existing and following other accounts will only do very little either.

The first thing you want to do is write something about yourself in your bio and write an
#introduction post that gives people an idea of who you are. In many cases people may not even allow you to follow them if you don’t, let alone follow you back!

Second: Actually post some stuff about yourself. Boosts don’t count! Responding to others is important (see next point), but doesn’t count for this! And especially at the start use appropriate hashtags (don’t spam them, or people
will block you). Let people see who you are and don't be afraid of not maintaining a pristine facade of innocence; this isn’t linkedin, nobody here cares for boot-lickers, but a lot of people are curious about folk that are in some way interesting[2]. Also respect your readers! This means using appropriate content warnings, whether you think they are needed or not[3] and even more so by writing alt texts for all images you post[4].

Third:
Interact with people! You don’t want to become a celebrity, you want to find friends and in order for the latter to become a thing, you need to engage in some form of conversation. If you follow me with an empty account I may take a look at it, but probably won’t bother much beyond that, because you haven’t shown me why I should care. If I see you reacting to my posts often enough for me to start recognizing your profile, (some degree of persistence is key here) I might follow you even if you don’t follow me. (This is an invitation btw!)

And there too: A fitting emoji reaction (if your instance supports them) is worth more than a like, and a textual response is worth
way more than that. Remember, you are not here to passively consume, but to actively engage! And once you do that, you will automatically end up finding your bubble and can grow from existing connections within that.

Also, a note on self-boosts (boosting your own posts): Don’t spam them[6], but it’s okay to use them. If you post something way out of the timezone of most of your followers it may be
necessary to boost it at a better time! Always remember that there are people here, not algorithms!

In any case, have fun and don’t be too afraid of making honest mistakes, it’s usually fine as long as you apologize[7] when people point them out and learn from them.

[1]
#Mastodon is just one software that you can use to access a much broader network; this network is known as the “Fediverse” or “Fedi” for short and there are other genuinely independent softwares that allow you to the same, be it Miskey, Sharkey, Iceshrimp), Akoma, Pleroma, you name it…
This message is for example posted from an instance that runs Sharkey.

[2] Interesting can include cool projects, radical political takes, unashamed self-expression, weird kinks, (justified) complaints about the world being shit, calling out bigotry in the general culture, you name it… Essentially anything that most people wouldn’t post on linked in.

[3] A lot of people will not just not interact with your posts if you don't add CWs (remember, you rely on their boosts for reach!), they may even go so far to block you. A CW doesn’t mean that the topic isn’t important it means that you respect your reader’s decision on whether they have at the time at which they see your post the capacity and the interest to handle that post. Using a CW does
not cost you reach, it increases your reach! Also note that a firm culture of CWs makes it so that Fedi can handle far more than pretty much any other social medium. You can curse here, condemn politicians in a strength that would get you kicked of everywhere else (ideally use a server not in that politician’s country though 😉), post hardcore porn of yourself and it will be placed next to people who post pictures of their cats, talk about what they cooked or share their experiences from coding. (Sometimes all on the same account!) But this only works if you can filter out posts that are not appropriate at the time!

[4] Not doing so
will be seen as discriminatory and ableist (because it is!!), will be called out (and not necessarily in a nice way for that matter), and will cause your posts to not get boosted.

[5] Nobody cares if 100% of the people don’t mind your presence but don’t care beyond that. It’s usually much more useful to have 10% like you a lot, even if the majority dislikes you! So don’t be
too afraid to be yourself! (This doesn’t mean that you should try to be hated, don’t get this wrong! And if your server owner hates you, you may quickly find yourself without a server!)

[6] Not spamming is in general good advice. Some people (that includes me) won’t follow accounts that post tons of posts per day because it can drown out their feed. Replies tend to be less of a problem there, but with posts that are not reacting to another post you may want to consider not doing medium to high double digits per day.

[7] Be honest but clear and try to not shift blame. Don’t try to weasel your way out, some people here are
very (honestly: sometimes overly so) sensitive to corpo apologies and will take them very badly.
