the most important part to remember about fedi is
you get out what you put in
a lot of people quit because they make an account and their feed is empty
they never take the time to write a bio, upload an avatar, make an introduction post, or even just try to follow others
you gotta do all that yourself here. because it's social media in your hands, but that means it's in your hands
so yes it's more upfront effort than corpo socials which do all that for you
but the payoff is massive and a much better overall social media experience than you could ever find anywhere on the big corpo web

i recommend signing up on a smaller approval-based instance btw! so not one that leaves the door wide open for anyone to make an account but rather one that vets new signups based on asking for a sentence or two about why you wanna join when you create an account
the moderators of these instances tend to be paying closer attention than the mods of huge open signup servers

so yeah if you see something bad, be sure to report it. an actual real live person operating at manageable scale will see it and respond!
if it's a bad account on an otherwise good-seeming server be sure to forward the report so their mod team can handle it on their end! but if you think the server that sent it is entirely bad, don't forward it to avoid harassment being directed at you
don't worry about bothering us, your mods and admins want you to have a good experience on here! we're happy to resolve reports to keep your social media experience safer and comfier :3

So, be really careful if you @ someone!
If you want to mention an account without the account seeing the post, replace the @ signs with the word AT before you publish, and make sure you're using a non-public visibility like followers-only or DMs.
