¿Sabían que ayer el servidor principal de Mastodon sufrió un ataque que intentó colapsar su funcionamiento mediante una avalancha de tráfico falso?
Un ataque de denegación de servicio distribuido, conocido como DDoS, ocurre cuando miles de computadoras infectadas envían peticiones al mismo tiempo a un sitio web hasta que sus recursos se agotan y deja de responder. Ayer, 20 de abril de 2026, la instancia mastodon.social fue el blanco de una de estas ofensivas masivas, lo que provocó que muchos usuarios vieran mensajes de error o no pudieran cargar sus cronologías durante varias horas. Los administradores del sistema tuvieron que implementar medidas de defensa rápidas para filtrar ese tráfico basura y permitir que las conexiones reales pudieran pasar de nuevo.
Lo más interesante de este suceso es que, debido a la forma en que está construido el Fediverso, el ataque solo afectó a quienes tienen su cuenta en ese servidor específico. Mientras mastodon.social luchaba por mantenerse en pie, el resto de las miles de instancias independientes que forman la red siguieron funcionando sin problemas, demostrando que no hay un solo punto de falla que pueda tumbar a toda la comunidad. Este incidente ocurrió apenas unos días después de que la red Bluesky pasara por una situación similar, lo que indica un aumento en este tipo de actividades contra las plataformas de comunicación descentralizadas.
