Thanks to everyone who contributed financially to our little #openbsd and #gameoftrees based #git repository hosting project in 2025! :flan_flowers:

Here are the numbers for contributions in 2025 which arrived via #opencollective, with the corresponding amounts of platform and payment processor fees, and taxes (due in the EU only because tax thresholds in other regions have not been crossed):

EU amount: 1975.40€

EU VAT: 342.84€

EU net amount: 1632.56€

EU fees: 271.30€

non-EU amount: 830.00€

non-EU fees: 139.52€

Total amount without fees: 2805.40€

Total fees: 410.82€

Here are the equivalent numbers for paid subscriptions (people actually using the service) in 2025:

EU amount: 30.00€

EU VAT: 5.21€

EU net amount: 24.79€

EU fees: 1.20€

non-EU amount: 210.00€

non-EU fees: 11.48€

Total amount without fees: 240.00€

Total fees: 12.68€

It is evident that we are currently relying on people making voluntary contributions to keep the lights on, rather than on actual users of the service (though there is some overlap between both groups, which is nice). We are hoping to close this gap by the end of 2026.

If you like our project then you could help us a lot by raising awareness of our existence among people you know who might be interested.

If you did already consider booking a subscription but have decided against doing so, do not hesitate to let us know why. Perhaps we can improve things for you

This morning turned into an unexpected deep dive into open-source history.

While reading Richard Stallman’s letter, I also revisited the BitKeeper episode that ultimately led Linus Torvalds to author Git (ਗਿਟ). What started as a licensing conflict ended up shaping how the world collaborates on software today.

Reading Letter from Richard Stallman

Thank You, Larry McVoy

Morning was to learn GIT/git (ਗਿਟ) history, how it started with BitKeeper issue. Linus Torvalds authored Git.

What about name git - slang for an unpleasant or silly person in British English (from Wikipedia), but man page - the stupid content tracker

I never heard of Andrew Tridgell before. I was delighted to learn about his story. Samba, rsync etc...

I deem git servers(gitlab, gitea, forgejo) as a high storage application, which means I either use s3 storage to store stuff on the nas or run it directly on the nas. Now the issue is that they don't support full s3, so most of the data still stays locally, and on the nas, it has some stupid permission issue with the container user and group id.

Today I started looking into #jujutsu. I finally understand what #jj heads are raving about. It's finally *easy* to author the history of code changes.

Editing, splitting and even moving changes in the history is much easier than it used to be with #git. At the same time, it is fully compatible with the ‘old’ world, as it acts as a front end for git.

Marvellous!

This back-to-work season has completely drained me! Quiet dev evening tonight. I "just" took the time to do a quick pass on the tickets and think about the problem that v0.4 will solve.

In the status column of issues https://gitroot.dev/boards/issues.html a new `v0.4` label appears on what I plan to tackle. And a `help wanted` label on what I don't intend to touch at all (if I manage to resist the temptation!).

I think the next major feature for GitRoot will be the ability to render multiple branches in the web interface... I won't say more because I'm not yet sure how to do it, but I really want to solve this problem.

Anyone know a self hostable service that warn when a git (any git) change a specific file or add a release (github) ?

my goals is to be able to follow change and release without having an account.
