Random musings. Given all the regulation, censorship and invasion of privacy that we are seeing governments implement on the Internet currently, I think Mastodon (re-)kickstarting popularity of 90s style decentralisation of services is going to be more important than ever for privacy, freedom and innovation for individuals and companies who can't afford to lobby governments.

30% of all word-based domain extensions are managed by 1 large corporation in the United States.
The biggest words based corporation was called Donuts Inc — A corporation that for the longest time went unnoticed because the name is not what it implies. They eventually became Identity Digital Inc, which is owned by Ethos Capital.
Ethos Capital is one of the larger investment and capital marketing companies in the country, which is located in my state of Massachusetts, USA.
The second-largest corporation for words based domains was Afilias Inc, which also was bought out by Identity Digital Inc. Which, once again, is owned by Ethos Capital.
Nearly every word-based domain is sponsored and governed by a corporation. The majority of those are in the United States. But Identity Digital Inc, which is owned by Ethos Capital, controls a large sum of them, and you can see the full list on Wikipedia (see URL).

Nous nous trouvons à la jonction entre deux mondes. D’un côté, le législateur souhaite protéger ses citoyens, mais, d’un autre côté, la technologie n’a jamais été pensée pour effectuer un contrôle central. Nous verrons dans les prochaines semaines et mois comment cette tension va se répercuter sur les services décentralisés, comme Mastodon et le besoin de contrôle du législateur.
