It's frustrating to see people lie about me and others like this.

eldritch.cafe/@orange_lux/1149

I am fairly obviously posting from mastodon.social and not some other instance.

My receipts include several examples of Ro being explicitly racist as part of a queerphobic attack, including references to anti-gay hate crimes directed at racialized people.

Content warning:Formal Systems ... (and other stuff concequences et al) 3/?

I can't say that any of these types of systems (whether open or closed) have shown that they are actually useful for me, and I feel that they are very much harmful.

Many times I've had people say that they, "don't like" some thing that I've mentioned or talked about, which I'd then say that I'd like to hear what the reasons are for that, only for people to not answer.

It's not that I need a full explanation, but searching for, "what's wrong with..." is often a tricky thing to figure out if all you know is that there's something wrong.

Often when I do (like I just did) it seems like it's based on some argument that either is poorly formed, or fails to understand (poorly formed, I mean based on invalid premises, or unsound arguments).

It's
fine to do such, but it becomes difficult to understand, for people who look and go, "but your argument is unsound," or "your argument is based on invalid premises".

Like I can read it, and try to come up with whether or not there is a sound and valid argument that supports the conclusion, but usually I'm left hanging with a sense that due to a misunderstanding, I won't really understand.

Now a
better approach in my opinion is, "I just don't like it, and I don't really know why." That to me I can actually go, "yep fine, nothing wrong with that argument, and I have no reason to disagree with you." Well, I may have reason to disagree, but I have no reason to try to give you information to change your mind.

I do
not use Shinigami Eyes. I have used it in the past, and for reasons stated above:

* I found it to have bad results.
* I found myself being compelled to "trust" it.
* I found that it disrupted my experience of browsing (not stated above).

Possibly some others, I've never gone back to it. I may have removed it. I may have just not felt a desire to add it after I switched browsers (or computers).

Now the
#Fediblock issues I've kind of been thinking about. First off, I have zero problem with those who post about an instance (or of recent an email domain) to block. Especially if there's enough information you can make a decision based on.

I often do a "I'll take a note of that." Then I move on. I make similar posts myself. I
hope that people will either do the same as myself, or take some time to look at what I've said, and see if it seems like it's valid.

I
saw many people who would comment that "kolektiva is bad". I'd ask what the issue was, and no one said anything about what bad stuff is there.

The site(s) seem to be very much trying to promote that they are progressive, and seem like (on the surface) a very good thing.

On my PeerTube instance, I spotted a Proud Boys video, which was posted there, and it's possibly posted as a "criticism" but it's posted as it was originally, and ... it's a video that was posted March 3, 2023. It's still there.

I've shared this detail. It's something that can be confirmed. (cont).

Content warning:Formal Systems ... (and other stuff concequences et al) 1/?

There's about 3 different things coming together here. Reading *Gödel, Escher, Bach* by Douglas Hofstadter (I think much of the issues there are issues in retrospect, not that they would have been evident at the time, though I'd love to find an answer to if they were evident or not).

Shinigami Eyes transphobia detector add on drama.

#Fediblock issues (past and now present). They are all connected in having some issues.

There also is some personal stuff that probably comes up, where formal systems of community end up failing. Someone (not sure if there's any follow relationship here) posted about a very informal bike repair system they were told "that would never work" when it was a real system that was working, and had been for years.

I'm probably going to be going all over the place with this, and this is probably going to be several notes (it's longer already than a single Mastodon default length toot).

The Hofstadter stuff is hard for me to really pin down, but it really feels like there's something in what he's arguing that just is flawed logically. It could be the idea that formal systems are a sound way to describe reality (and maybe I've failed to see that what he's saying is quite the opposite, and this is an argument by contradiction (is that correct?) rather than his argument being based on what he's said so far).

And that's also something about it, it feels like it
is an argument. Not so much that this is just something talking about what the state of things are, but that this is something which is presenting a compelling argument to make a sound point.

Currently reading about how "brains work on a low level based on a formal system." And I'm not sure that is a sound premise. I do know that we can't now (46 years later?) say that we have any understanding that could say definitively that to be true. We have many people arguing that it is, and we just don't have enough data, and data processing to show it to be so.

The stuff going on in my life, it's about how when the existing driving culture type stuff starts to fall apart, and relying on formal systems of helping end up being a huge pain.

I would say that a lot of why that fails is trying to find ways to help people, in a culture that's deeply individualistic. I feel that if I were to go to neighbours with jars of pickles (or something similar) it would be met with high levels of suspicion, and it's not just that it would be me they'd be suspicious of, but rather the entire act of doing something like that.

Now the other two things, feel like they are easier for me to look at. The issue with the issues that are showing up with Shinigami Eyes, is that there are problems of false positives and false negatives that people have noticed. This is something that is without question.

Some
may feel that they aren't false, but really it's hard to argue that they are actually fair... (cont)

🚨 Scam Alert: "Verify your Fedi account" Phishing Attempt 🚧

Attention everyone on Mastodon! There's a scam making the rounds where malicious actors impersonate moderators or admins. They send private messages or make posts that mimic notifications, claiming that your account needs verification. These messages often include a link for you to "complete the verification process."

⚠️ This is a Scam!

Your server admin will never ask you to click a link to verify your account.
No other admin from any other server will either, even if they appear to be part of the main Mastodon team.
If your account is suspended, you won't receive a message about it. Instead, you'll see a notification upon logging in that your account is temporarily suspended.

How to Identify the Scam:

Fake admin accounts often use names containing "moderator" or "admin," but this doesn't mean they are legitimate.
Legitimate admins or instance owners usually have a badge or marking on their profile indicating their role.

What to Do:

If you receive a message or post urging you to click a link to verify your account, report it immediately.
If you have any doubts about your account status, contact your server admin or moderation team directly.
To verify the authenticity of an admin or instance owner, visit the "About" page of your instance. This page typically lists contact information for the real team administering your instance.
Always be cautious when interacting with accounts claiming to be from Mastodon or your instance's admin team.

Important Reminder:

Mastodon does not perform age verification. If you receive a message or post claiming to be from Mastodon or your instance's admin team, always verify its authenticity before taking any action.

Reporting the Scam:

If you encounter this scam, report it to your instance's admin team and use relevant tags, such as #FediBlock, to help raise awareness.

Personal Note:

I'm not a cybersecurity expert, but I find this new scam in the Fediverse quite interesting. If you feel like sharing your experiences with me, I would appreciate it! I'm looking to collect cases and get a broader view of this phishing attack. Maybe I'll even try to write a report about it. Feel free to tag me in any relevant posts.

Let's stay vigilant and help each other stay safe online!

🚨 SPAM WAVE ALERT 🚨

Hello everyone! Lily here with another update on the latest happenings in our community. Today, I encountered a new type of spam bot on Mastodon that I hadn’t seen before. This particular spam account, which goes by the name Nicole and also refers to herself as “Fediverse Chick,” caught my attention. I must admit, I almost fell for her deceptive tactics, but a bit of caution saved me from engaging with her scam.

Curious about this emerging threat, I decided to investigate further by searching Mastodon for similar spam accounts. To my surprise, I discovered that many users have reported these types of bots under the #fediblock tag. It appears that these spam bots are increasingly targeting users across the fediverse, and their activities are causing quite a bit of concern within our community.

To protect myself and ensure a safer browsing experience, I have set up filters to automatically detect and block spam accounts. This proactive step meant that when I received a direct message from Nicole, I didn’t waste any time—I simply deleted it and chose to ignore any further attempts at contact.

I strongly encourage everyone to stay vigilant. If you encounter an account like Nicole or any other suspicious profiles, please consider blocking or muting them permanently to avoid any potential scams or unwanted interactions. Additionally, I’d like to extend a heartfelt thank you to @midtsveen for reporting this spam account. Their quick action and dedication played a crucial role in protecting the community and helped prevent further exposure to these scams.

Stay safe and always be cautious while exploring the fediverse!

Content warning:Block Reccomendations: The TechHub Public Block List, ~200 instances. UPDATE

Releasing a minor update to TechHub's public #Blocklist: added a couple things, fixed a couple issues. Making this available to other Fedi admins.

Link is still the same...
drive.google.com/file/d/1H6Tlj

We recommend servers block these instances because they are known bad actors, where we have seen direct evidence of extreme levels of bigotry, harassment, and pedophilia.

While you should look into every list you import, and I definitely encourage anyone importing this to skim the list and pay attention to the given reasons, I do not encourage going to the instances in question, as many contain illegal content such as terrorism and #CSAM.

I release this list in the hopes of helping servers which are new or have less moderator-time get the known-offender instances off their timelines, especially ones which continually appear on the #FediBlock and #InstanceBlock tags.

Content warning:Block Reccomendations: The TechHub Public Block List, 190+ instances we block or limit

I've been working on this for a few months now. I want to take more time on it before I say it's truly ready, but some of the things on the #FediBlock and #InstanceBlock tags lately have made me decide to rush this out now: I'm seeing people talk about servers we've had blocked for over a year now, where #admins harass minorities, promote terrorism, and trade #CSAM.

I'm convinced this needs to be available sooner rather than later.

This is a #blocklist from an older, block-averse instance, with servers we've seen absolutely unacceptable content from over the years.

I encourage you to look over the reasons before you import, but be warned, many of these have CSAM and/or terrorism on the main timeline.

View the servers themselves at your own risk.

Importable CSV: drive.google.com/file/d/1H6Tlj

THIS IS NEW: If y'all see anything that shouldn't be on there, respond and I'll recheck.
