The GDPR is Europe’s defence against digital oligarchy, child harm and foreign political interference. Deregulation plans are misguided
giants have been either not applied or delayed, for fear of offending Donald Trump. Now leaked documents reveal that the European Commission plans to gut a central part of Europe’s digital rulebook. This will hurt Europe’s innovators and hand the future of Europe’s tech sovereignty to US firms.
Once Europe’s most hyped law, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is now on the chopping block. Powerful forces within the European Commission, supported by the German government, hope that deregulation will boost Europe’s tech sector, particularly AI. This is a grave mistake.

"Meta, the Silicon Valley-based tech giant that owns Facebook and Instagram, has for years maintained that its advertising standards prohibit “ads that promote the sale or use of illicit or recreational drugs.” Meta told the Star that it has “zero tolerance” for such ads and continually works to improve its already “robust” systems to detect and remove them.
Yet they continue to flow into Canadians’ feeds, generating revenue for Meta from drug traffickers who use the firm’s lucrative advertising algorithm to reach new customers.
Too often, that algorithm puts the ads in front of those already vulnerable to the drugs’ lure."

｢ Next year will see the end arrive for two of Facebook's external social plugins. The platform's Like button and Share button for third-party websites will be discontinued on February 10, 2026.
