Dynamic DNS for Docker Containers

blog.hardill.me.uk/2025/09/19/

I’ve built a collection of tools in the past that allow Docker containers to be accessed using `.local` hostnames by seeing up mDNS/Avahi cname.

This works well, but it under most situations is limited to just the local subnet. If we want to make things available to a wider audience we need to make use of real DNS hostnames, not just mDNS.

Kubernetes solves this with the ExternalDNS operator […]

I've got - as I've mentioned before - a containerized
#systemd in #Docker in a $5/mo #VPS. Errythang #misskey needs - except #postgreSQL - is in that one container.

On another $5/mo VPS in tokyo, I have postgreSQL inside a Docker container. That postgreSQL accepts connections only from its own 10.0.0.0/8 network, a VLAN I have in the
#Tokyo datacenter. It doesn't accept connections from the global internet, or even my personal laptop. (I ssh into the box when necessary.)

I can cold-power reboot either the misskey box, or the postgreSQL box, independently of the other. That's necessary every so often because I'm putting too much federation traffic onto the bottom-tier VPS boxes and the database will lag or lock up every so often.

Will upscale my budget later when the time comes.

Anyone benchmark/stress test an arm64 apple container with an orbstack arm64 container yet? Wondering if orbstack, or docker desktop, might adapt for this new framework into their architecture.

Today, @liberaforms released a new version including our work on its Dockerfile.

As explained on the project blog:

"The Dockerfile has been improved in many ways, but most notably, it now uses a multi-stage build. As a result, the final image now only includes the runtime dependencies, and not the development ones any more. This led to a significant size reduction of ~43%! It also helps reduce the attack surface as development tools that can be used to craft exploits, such as gcc, are now absent from the final image."

blog.liberaforms.org/2025/09/2

This is a first step of a global enhancement regarding the containerisation of LiberaForms. Our next objective is to remove the use of the root account for running the service.

got calibre-web working properly in its own container on the LAN

I wanted an easier way to consolidate and browse our family's e-books, some of which I've had since the late 90s.

I set up a container in #TrueNAS and then installed #calibre-web with a #docker container

#CaddyWebServer as a reverse proxy so people don't have to remember the port number; this is the only thing served on this container.
