I took a look at the Dockerfiles for building the immich containers and I'm glad they ship it as a container image.
Wasn't looking forward to install, configure and keep the shaky nodejs stuff running say on a Ubuntu VM natively.
You are free to do that though, if you're a masochist and/or despise containers.
Take a look at the Dockerfile in their repo, run docker inspect on the builder base image mentioned there to get which distribution image they used and what they've added to it, then follow everything you see in the Dockerfile with apt or dnf, etc on your VM.
And then try to keep this Jenga tower of libraries and versions upright through every OS update.

#GamesOnWhales is by far the coolest thing i've set up in 2025. I have an #AMD #Radeon RX 9060 XT, 48GB of ram and a #Ryzen 5 in there. Being able to build custom desktops using #Docker and use them without any latency is AWESOME! Now i can play games on my #thinkpad, spin up various different desktops for any usecase, or use my #kalilinux desktop from whatever device i want to. I can even play #Cyberpunk on my #AndroidTV. I have no words to describe how much i love this 😁

As a holiday treat to myself, I got a server through Hetzner's server auction. Now I need to learn how to set up docker stuff on it via command line because I don't think there's a GUI interface I can use.
Anyone have any links that will help someone that hasn't touched a linux system since the days of OS/2 Warp? (Which I know is not linux, but it is going to give the olds an idea of how long it's been.)
