Guten Morgen.
Guten Morgen.

Steven Rosenberg wrote an interesting post about being somewhat inclined to move his blog to WordPress for the built-in commenting system, but being dissatisfied with the hosting options. I posted my own solution as a suggestion (comment pending approval at press time), but I thought I would expand a bit here.
I host both this site and The New Leaf Journal on a Hetzer VPS server. It costs between $5-6 per month with a little bit of extra storage. I manage the server with Cloudron’s free plan. Cloudron provides a robust server management UI and automatically configures WordPress (and optionally Redis). It has an excellent built-in file manager and domain management system. Otherwise, it stays out of the way and allows me to manage my WordPress sites as if it were not there. There are a few caveats. Firstly, Cloudron itself requires some server resources. Secondly, Cloudron is, at its core, a paid service, and I suppose the terms of its free plan could change any time (I would probably consider the paid plan to be cost-prohibitive for my use-case, especially since I would need a more expensive server to take advantage of being able to host more public-facing apps).
(For those interested, I wrote an article about using the free version of the UpdraftPlus plugin to “move” The New Leaf Journal from Bluehost to Hetzner back in 2022. I used the same process to move from a bigger Hetzner VPS to a smaller one back in 2024.)
Another solution is Pikapods. Pikapods provides paid hosting for individual docker apps. WordPress starts at $1.70 per month, but can be more expensive depending on how much CPU, RAM, and storage the user gives to the WordPress pod. I use Pikapods for Miniflux and Wallabag (not WordPress, although I did briefly test a WordPress install) and have had good experiences with it thus far. It does not have a management UI, but does allow SFTP access to the app’s files. There are quick and easy directions for connecting the WordPress install (or any PikaPods app) to a custom domain.

@deljones Hi Del thanks for your help, well what I'm curious about is how to ensure the instance can scale and support a large amount of users, especially for video calls. I've been running 2 #Nextcloud instances for years using #Hetzner Storage Share in combination with an #OnlyOffice instance run through #Yunohost. It works great but for calls involving 3+ participants a High Performance Backend is required. Is that something you've used yourself?
The 3 options I picture are:
- using Nextcloud AIO on a good VPS.
- installing NextCloud through Yunohost or #Cloudron and link to a separate HPB server.
- same as previous but with Hetzner storage share.
And to clarify, the use case is professional, with scalability and maintainability in mind. That's why I'm leaning towards #cloudron to easily add and manage other apps later on (I like the fact that every app has its own container and can be independently backed-up and restored in 2 clicks).
The HPB is somehow needed to allow video calls with more than 2 persons. Setting up a server for HPB that could be used for several Nextcloud instances is a possibility I'm considering.
I’m happy with the state of my agate app for @cloudron. My Gemini site is now hosted on it and it seems pretty solid.
I posted the source for it in case anyone is interested:

#Joyn
🥳 I made a thing! 🥳
If someone is interested in testing a Gemini server for @cloudron please take a look at https://hub.docker.com/r/didiermalenfant/net.malenfant.agate
It may not be production ready yet as I'm still learning a lot here but I have it installed on a test server and it seems to work ok.
Any feedback welcomed! 🙏🏻

So I may have packaged my first #cloudron app yesterday. I need to setup a test server so I can install it and see what happens. #AlwaysLearning
And another new app package dropped for your #cloudron 😃 This time Beszel a nice app to monitor all your docker containers on another server: https://beszel.dev/
As usual announcement with more details: https://forum.cloudron.io/topic/13880/beszel-is-now-available
