This morning on CBC’s The Current, Matt Galloway interviewed someone who was driven into psychosis by engaging with ChatGPT.
He started out by asking it to define Pi. From there it evolved into a mathematical discussion, of which he knew nothing about, involving time.
The bot convinced him he was on to something interesting and could help him develop it further. The guy subscribed to ChatGPT Pro whereupon things really went downhill.
His view of ChatGPT now that he’s free from it, and on disability while undergoing therapy, is:
“This is a product designed by people to exploit things that are human for engagement. Period!”
He now leads a support group of others that were similarly affected and family members of suicides.
In closing and responding to the question about what he had learned from his experience:
“Humans are better. If this was a disease human connection is the cure.”
