“ChatGPT, what time is it?”
One of the most common user frustrations—“Why can’t ChatGPT just tell the time?”—reveals something deeper about how large language models work. They don’t track reality; they predict plausible text based on past data, sometimes patched with external tools.
If you’re treating an LLM like a real-time oracle instead of a very eloquent autocomplete, that’s on you.

After seeing some #AI #privacy posts about #ChatGPT claiming to not be able to see your location, IP, or anything I decided to test it.
With no account or history, I asked it a few questions, and sure enough, it not only knows exactly where I am but is gaslighting me into thinking it was pure coincidence.
A friend followed the same instructions and got the same results in his location as well.
Yikes.
