"Rather than showing the capability for generalized logical inference, these chain-of-thought models are "a sophisticated form of structured pattern matching" that "degrades significantly" when pushed even slightly outside of its training distribution"

GPT-5 is a joke. Will it matter? - by Brian Merchant bloodinthemachine.com/p/gpt-5-

'I don’t think the GPT-5 flop ultimately matters all that much to most folks, and it can certainly be papered over well enough by a skilled salesman in an enterprise pitch meeting. Again, all this is clarifying: OpenAI is again centering workplace automation, while retreating from messianic AGI talk. Here’s NBC, in a story about how Altman has apparently and rather suddenly (once again) changed his stance on AGI:

“I think it’s not a super useful term,” Altman told CNBC’s “Squawk Box” last week, when asked whether the company’s latest GPT-5 model moves the world any closer to achieving AGI.

Remember, just last February Altman published an essay on his personal blog that opened with the line “Our mission is to ensure that AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) benefits all of humanity.” Suddenly it’s not a super useful term? Another bad joke, surely. If anything, it’s clear that Altman knows just what a super useful term AGI is, at least when it comes to attracting investment capital. But Altman tends to announce AGI is near when OpenAI is pursuing funding, and shrink from the term when the company is at a point of vulnerability.'

LLMs will never be what they're currently advertised as. They are not answer machines. They are not search engines. They do not think. They do not provide data.

All they do is generate text via statistical weights. They do not generate thoughts, or information. Just characters in sequence. They cannot be stopped from "hallucinating." Because they do not "hallucinate." They just generate text. Whether that text reflects reality or not is only ever due to coincidence.

These companies won't tell you this, because they want your money. So they lie, which primes you to accept more BS from the automated BS machine.

"GPT-5 achieves state-of-the-art performance on a number of #AI benchmarks, according to #OpenAI’s internal tests, but it is far from a clean sweep: On a few tests, competing products such as Google #Gemini, Anthropic’s #Claude, and xAI’s #Grok outperform, or are just barely below the level of, OpenAI’s new top model. ... Yet that may not matter. ... Before it is more intelligent, GPT-5 is more usable—and more likely to attract and retain users."

Every story where someone is driven mad by ChatGPT begins with lies about the technology, what it is, and what it does—lies that originate from OpenAI itself.

The very framing of "having a conversation with a computer" is artificial, deceitful, and constructed by the company in order to turn statistical text generation into a consumer-facing product. Deceit lies at the core of what OpenAI does with this technology. The people being "fooled" by ChatGPT are first fooled by OpenAI. People are being actively coached—by real, live human beings—into being easily manipulated by this software.
