Last night we wanted to power on an emergency replacement consumer class #amplifier at a party (but we forgot to take the remote with us).

Turned out (after installing it near the dancefloor), some #Denon amplifiers (like avr 1100 rd) are not switching to ON, when pressing #power button. Instead they go to #Standby.

While party-people were waiting for music, staring at us, a younger and an older guy started research, how to power on denon receiver without remote.

I didn't find the answer last night, and it took me 20 minutes of websearch, to find this forum-talk today, where pushing the "tuner" and "video select" buttons are mentioned, to switch from standby to #ON: avsforum.com/threads/old-denon

While this is really bad device-#design, it makes me furious, that i did not find the information easily with websearch or on the Denon company website. Perhaps my search terms were bad.

The other one used #chatgpt and got the correct answer in 2 Minutes.

I still will not use "AI" for academic work, but i am asking me, what are the most efficient ways to store and retrieve such technical information? I even did not find a real user manual for this receiver online.

Apparently Sam Altman says that talking to GPT-5 is like talking to a PhD-level expert, so insulting to all PhDs.

"The boss of the firm behind ChatGPT and the UK technology secretary discussed a multibillion-pound deal to give the entire country premium access to the AI tool, the Guardian has learned.

Sam Altman, a co-founder of OpenAI, talked to Peter Kyle about a potential agreement to give UK residents access to its advanced product.

According to two sources with direct knowledge of the meeting, the idea was floated as part of a broader discussion in San Francisco about opportunities for collaboration between OpenAI and the UK.

Those close to the discussion say Kyle never really took the idea seriously, not least because it could have cost as much as £2bn. But the talks show the enthusiasm with which the technology secretary has embraced the artificial intelligence sector, despite concerns over the accuracy of some chatbot responses and implications for privacy and copyright.

OpenAI offers free and subscription versions of ChatGPT. The paid version, ChatGPT Plus, costs $20 a month and gives users faster response times and priority access to new features."

"The unnerving thing is that now, with hundreds of millions of people regularly engaging with chatbots, English-speaking humans are starting to talk like the inhuman communicator on the other side.

For example, ChatGPT uses the word “delve” at higher rates than people generally use when writing or speaking English. As Florida State University researchers Tom S. Juzek and Zina B. Ward have found, this likely results from small biases and errors in the human feedback process compounding over time. Employees of AI companies checking over large language model (LLM) outputs are often low-wage workers from countries such as Nigeria and Kenya, where “delve” is used at higher rates than in American or British English.

Slight lexical overrepresentations may thus have been reinforced into the model — sometimes even more frequently than in the workers’ own usage. Because of the job’s time pressures and stressful conditions, the checkers might have missed the “delve” frequency while clicking through sample texts, leading to further amplification. (Some other examples are “intricate,” “commendable” and “meticulous.”)

Now this overuse is bleeding into global culture."

(GPT-5) talks like a guy you kind of know from work who really, really needs cocaine but can't get it and try to endear himself to everyone in the hopes he'll score some.

Ask me how I know (and it's not because I've ever touched cocaine).

AI Bubble?

I have been listening to the recent edition of the HardFork podcast from the New York Times. The topic is “Is This an A.I bubble?” Part of the narrative seems to be that it is not a bubble if you redefine the normal meaning of bubble. I do not find this convincing.

The other part of the podcast covers “Metas missing morals”. The use of the word missing implies that they have existed at some point.
