Over on Bluesky they are discussing about whether the network is doomed because the active user base is stagnating and/or even declining slightly. I would love to see the fediverse have exploding user stats the same as Bluesky users. Why no doom and gloom over here? It's because we don't have venture capitalists that will pull the plug on us if we don't hit the growth metrics. We never had the deep pockets but what we do have is hundreds or thousands of people throwing resources and money here and there to make this diverse network work. That builds in resilience that one funded by VC and chasing ad revenue will never have. #fediverse #Bluesky

The summit of Mount #Olsberg has already been ‘cleared up’ following #Hurricane #Kyrill (January 2007), but its effects are still visible.
In the centre of the picture, you can see the #summit #cross and the mountain hut, which were spared by the hurricane.

Ehrlich gesagt glaube ich ja, dass Bluesky - und die anderen mit ATProto arbeitenden Systeme - praktisch kaum relevant werden. Das hat nichts mit der technischen Brillanz zu tun, die ich in diesem Protokoll sehe. Wir hatten da oft drüber gesprochen, dass ein Netzwerk sich durch Menschen bewährt und dass es genutzt wird. Das Fediverse hat diesen Punkt einfach. Und auch innerhalb des Fediverse mit all seinen problematischen Instanzen, mit ausgefallenen Servern oder notwendigen Umzügen hat es sich praktisch bewährt, wenn wir über den sozialen Graphen sprechen. Es gibt leider im Fediverse immer noch Leute, die meinen das Fediverse dadurch pushen zu müssen, indem sie Bluesky schlecht machen, falsch darstellen und Desinformation betreiben: das funktioniert nicht, denn der Platz, wo Ihr schlecht redet, Desinformation betreibt und Falschdarstellungen postet, ist in diesem Moment das Fediverse. Ihr macht das Fediverse in dem Moment toxisch. Interessanterweise kommt man bei Bluesky ganz ohne negatives Gerede über das Fedi aus, das macht es so angenehm. Vielleicht könnte man sich von diesem Habitus eine Scheibe abschneiden, es könnte helfen das Fediverse zu einem guten Ort zu machen.

Taking VC is choosing to put yourself into massive debt in order to fund an R&D project while engaging in predatory pricing. You're delusional if you think the people doing this risky anti competitive shit actually want to help the world by building an open network. It's totally possible they are great people and doing this out of ignorance, but then they why would you believe they are smart enough to build and maintain what you need them to? GTFO.
