pub (@pub@bonfire.mavnn.eu)

Starting to put together a hacky program to federate my blog by reading the rss feed to publish articles with #activitypub and then provide a known url to show any replies that I can drop onto the actual blog pages.

But that means creating a directory for the code, which means a name, 'activity_rss' sounds good but that's too long, I know...

mkdir arss

Fortunately my brain caught up with me before I actually hit enter.

Do you remember when technology felt like a way forward?

Do you remember when tech felt like a way forward? That moment’s gone on the mainstream #closedweb path. What we’ve got now is something else entirely. Tools like Palantir and Project Maven aren’t about truth or insight. They’re excuse generators. Power does what it wants, then points to “the data” as cover. That’s the product. And the people building this? Still cosplaying as the good guys, well-paid servants of the #nastyfew, wrapped in the fading myth of being “freedom […]

I know some ActivityPub devs feel jealous of AtProto’s success.

I’ve felt it too.

But really, we shouldn’t.

Every serious step toward decentralization is a win for the open social web.

With tools like Bridgy from @anewsocial, we can stay connected across protocols and keep building a more open future together.

If you really believe in empowering humanity, then this isn’t competition, it’s momentum.

I've already expressed this feeling on Bluesky but I personally like atproto more than I do activitypub. I've always felt Fediverse platforms, main offender Mastodon, don't actually do anything to encourage decentralization, and actually kinda discourage it by having little annoyances such as having to open the post on the original website to view all replies reliably, which especially on mobile where I prefer using a dedicated app can be a bother.

Lemmy and Piefed seem to do much better in that regard tho, so it seems to mostly come down to implementation, but either way my account still isn't really able to be used on all instances, and it can't properly be moved between them either (something Nostr can do afaik tho)

Atproto *is* more complicated, but I also can't think of a way to do all the things it does *without* being complicated

I'd be happy talk to someone more knowledgeable of either though!

What? A social network started with funds from an AI mongering billionaire is weaving AI into its "features"? What kind of topsy-turvy reality is this??

Get a #WAFRN, #Mastodon, or other #federated social account and stop following hypetrains and billionaires.

Link at end but I mean, frankly, this is why I stick with a simple SSG. I don't even attempt #ActivityPub integration because I actually don't want comments on my blog, ever! Got something to say? People can send an email, and if you can't be bothered to send me an email, then your words aren't of any weight to me whatsoever. I don't want to make it *easier* for the web to talk to me. That's why that friction exists, but I do have to applaud you for giving it a shot and I actually fully understand your decision! If I didn't have help with my blog I'd have used Bearblog. sightlessscribbles.com/posts/c @elettrona @selfhosted @_elena

Fedibook groups just got a major rewrite.

Groups now work as a ActivityPub group actors — meaning members from Mastodon, Pixelfed, and other Fediverse platforms can join and participate, not just Fedibook users.

Invite a @mastodon.social friend to your group, they accept the follow request, and group posts start appearing in their home timeline. They can post back via DM. It just works.

On Fedibook, groups looks just like that face-thing.
