Fedicon is happening in Vancouver, BC this weekend

An in-person conference centered around the fediverse is happening this Friday and Saturday at UBC Robson Square in Vancouver, BC.

Put on by @reiver@mastodon.social, it is bringing together a number of big names including Evan Prodromou (of AP fame), Dan Supernault (Pixelfed creator), and more!

🎉 FediCon is in 1 day!

If you already have a FediCon ticket, you should receive this reminder e-mail message.

See you there!

🌐 FediCon
📍 Vancouver (Canada)
🗓️ August 1-2
ℹ️ https://fedicon.ca
🎟️ https://lu.ma/p4bbb941

I'll be on stage speaking about some of ActivityPub's "hard problems", and what people are doing to fix them. It's a rehash and expansion of a talk I gave at FOSDEM this past February.

Are there threadiverse related problems? I'd imagine so. Would love to include them in my presentation.

Destroying Autocracy – July 31, 2025

Welcome to this week’s “Destroying Autocracy”.

It’s your source for curated news affecting democracy in the cyber arena with a focus on protecting it. That necessitates an opinionated Butlerian jihad against big tech as well as evangelizing for open-source and the Fediverse. Since big media’s journalism wing is flailing and failing in its core duty to democracy, this is also a collection of alternative reporting on the eternal battle between autocracy and democracy. We also cover the cybersecurity world. You can’t be free without safety and privacy.

DA comes out on Thursday and is updated through the end of day on Friday. Then we start over. So take your time in perusing it and check back in over the weekend.

FYI, my opinions will be in bold. And will often involve cursing. Because humans. Especially tech bros. And fascists. Fuck ’em.

I'm thinking about making a federated learning management system with #activitypub. Possibly something like a lightweight #moodle or Microsoft Learn, but more likely something like #Duolingo. You'd craft tiny courses on your instance and learners would use their Mastodon accounts. Would this be a bad idea for some reason I haven't thought about yet?

@andypiper or the network part. We see not only what our friends post, but also what they boost; and very often what they boost will be the posts of people whose views resonate with our own — friends whom we have not yet encountered.

The thing which makes #Mastodon (and the whole #ActivityPub ecosystem) so good is that it does the network part so well.

@Rynach Excellent idea! I didn't know if @cwebber designed #ActivityPub to support client-side proof-of-work anti-spam protocols since I don't think they existed back then, but I do hope #Fediverse clients become Anubis-compatible. Even if #Anubis breaks my mobile app clients, though, I will still use the web browser fall-back. It's too good a solution to AI scrapers spamming my own servers to ignore.

I powered off the server on which @berkes@say.berk.es was running.

I don't use #mastodon or the #fediverse that often anymore. Certainly not enough to warrant running & paying for my own instance.

I'm just not excited about mastodon, #activitypub or the fediverse.I don't see it working out.

What is considered best practice when shutting down an #ActivityPub service? The services itself is not used by anyone, but still received a constant stream of activities for deleted users.
