Bluehost vs the Fediverse
I’ve been trying to get the ActivityPub plugin working on my WordPress site, which is already a sentence that filters out people with joy in their lives. It’s supposed to connect your site to the fediverse, like Mastodon, and when it works, it’s actually kind of beautiful. And it did work. Perfectly. Back when my […]

Hi #fediverse! I'm working on Hackers' Pub, a small #ActivityPub-powered social platform for developers and tech folks.

We're currently drafting a content #moderation (#flag/#report) system and would really appreciate any feedback from those who have experience with federated moderation—we're still learning.

Some ideas we're exploring:

Our guiding principle is that moderation should be about growth, not punishment. Expulsion is the last resort.

Here's the full draft if you're curious: https://github.com/hackers-pub/hackerspub/issues/192.

If you've dealt with moderation in federated contexts, what challenges did you run into? What worked well? We'd love to hear your thoughts.

I'm following two "boost spammers". Really interesting stuff mostly, but their boost-feed drowns out the rest of the followed users posts.

Is there a way to get their boost frenzy connected to the same list where their actual posts have been located?

Indeed NodeBB integrates very well into Hubzilla. For Mastodon IMO the only way to have a "group like" experience is to create a list that contains the forum's handle. As Mastodon meanwhile fetches replies better without additional actions on client side it is usable.

Sadly the Racoon client does not support Hubzilla as it lacks the Mastodon API. It's still possible to activate the ancient Twitter API which indeed works with AndStatus client e.g. but it's usage is quite poor. I hope that someday we will depend less on the Mastodon API and go forward with ActicityPub's own API.

An improvement in NodeBB would be if it would send some kind of marker so  that you would not have multiple forums named "General Discussion" all with the same profile picture. :)

Did you know that I have a website where I curate apps, websites, and resources for not only the Fediverse (ActivityPub) but for ATProto as well?

Check it out here: fediverseresources.com?ref=pro

I'm always looking for contributors and assistant curators. Reach out if you're interested.

Recently we have seen a massive spike of calls to /api/v1/instance/domain_blocks, from all kinds of players, including Google, Microsoft, Chinese IP addresses, a server farm in Cyprus and one belonging to an online casino farm on Malta. Those happen on medic.cafe as well as #Hule, which does not support domain blocks (yet).

I am wondering: what is the value of those (~4k today) spiders? Who would benefit from knowing which instances are blocked by whom? I am aware, that there's a bot run by an "edgy" MAGA/Hatepost/Memefarm instance, but this massive interest across actors makes me wonder.

sometimes i wish #activitypub and servers/clients supported both Like and Love activities, for when liking something  isn't strong enough...!

A sobering way to start the New Year - Manton Reece, creator of Micro.blog has a good blog (unsurprisingly), and discusses stats showing that the monthly active number of users on the Fediverse is slowly shrinking:

manton.org/2025/12/27/fedivers

I can probably attest to this, given how many accounts I found to be dead or abandoned when I had to manually curate the list of people I was following during the process of moving to this account.

As I replied over there, we need the #Fediverse to grow, in order to maintain a diversity of thought and particularly political opinion, especially in the current climate, but the Fediverse definitely has an on-boarding issue that centralised platforms such as Bluesky don't have. #Mastodon is the #ActivityPub tentpole & showcase platform, and if it can't get it sorted, then what can?

Edit: Deleted and re-posted due to timeline weirdness.
