How to Install #Pleroma on #Ubuntu #VPS (5 Minute Quick-Start Guide)

This article provides a guide demonstrating how to install Pleroma on Ubuntu VPS.
What is Pleroma?
Pleroma is a free, open-source, self-hostable microblogging server that speaks the #ActivityPub federation protocol—so your users can interact with people on other #Fediverse platforms (e.g., Mastodon) while you keep full control over your server ...

Europe, the Fediverse, and the story we failed to tell

A bunch of native #openweb people spent real time, energy, and focus pushing the #EU toward the #Fediverse. This wasn’t theoretical, it wasn’t speculative, it wasn’t a #NGO whitepaper or a #VC funding pitch. It was practical outreach, grounded in working technology and lived experience, aimed at reducing Europe’s dependency on centralized corporate platforms. One concrete moment of this work was the webinar organised between the European Commission and the ActivityPub community: […]

It’s frustrating when you fix a caption, but the old version lives on in the federated timeline. I wanted a "get it right the first time" tool. That's why I added AI-assisted drafting to Fediverse Composer Studio. Ensure your and tags are solid *before* broadcast.

A bunch of native #openweb people spent time, energy and focus pushing the #EU toward the #Fediverse:

socialhub.activitypub.rocks/t/

That webinar mattered. It showed that EU institutions were open to #ActivityPub as a way to reduce dependency on centralized corporate platforms.

This is exactly the kind of work we need more of, not less. So what went wrong?

Instead of building on this momentum, the grassroots fell to mess and attention drifted back to the familiar #dotcons. Which, in the end, is just more #techshit to compost later.

SocialHub itself documents this blocking story, but there’s little aggregation or narrative continuity

The missing piece: our own history. This story still hasn’t been properly told:

socialhub.activitypub.rocks/t/

We are very bad at telling our own history. And that failure has consequences.

When people don’t know: that #EU#Fediverse outreach already happened, that viable alternatives already exist, that these paths were actively neglected,

So that they fall — again and again — for the #dotcons mess, believing it’s the only “realistic” option.

This is exactly why #OMN, #indymediaback, #makinghistory, and #OGB matter.

Before we argue about funding, platforms, or scale, we need: Media to tell the story properly. History to remember what already worked. Governance to keep power visible and contestable

Only then can Europe regain any path to grassroots digital agency without reproducing the same capture dynamics under a different flag.

If we don’t tell our story, someone else will, and it won’t be told in our interests.

snac (@snac@comam.es)
I've just published version 2.89 of #snac, the simple, minimalistic #ActivityPub instance server written in C. It includes the following changes:

Fixed crash in pronouns processing (contributed by byte).

Added counters in the people page (contributed by byte).

New command-line option refresh, to refresh all follower and following Actor objects, marking them as broken if they are.

If you find #snac useful, please consider buying grunfink a coffee or contributing via LiberaPay.

BadgeFed 0.0.2 Release: Docker, Federation Standards, and FOSDEM 2026!

Hey Fediverse!

The changes have been coming fast and furious, so much happening that we couldn’t keep up with individual posts! But here we are with something big to share.

BadgeFed 0.0.2 is Live!

After incredible feedback from our community (huge thanks to @fajfer@mastodon.social for the contributions to @badgefed, it became clear we needed a new release.

Download BadgeFed 0.0.2 here →

What’s New

🐳 Docker-Ready

We’ve restructured everything for easier deployment. Now you can mount all persistent storage cleanly.

🌍 Global Expansion

With our new domain comes new opportunities—and new challenges! We’re currently exploring how to implement the ActivityPub Move activity to enable seamless account migration between BadgeFed servers. This would allow users to migrate their badge credentials and followers when moving between instances, maintaining the decentralized spirit while ensuring user sovereignty over their digital achievements.

📡 Federation Standards

We implemented FEP-67ff: FEDERATION.md (thanks @andypiper@macaw.social!)—you can see exactly how BadgeFed federates.

⚡ Performance & Reliability

🔍 And Much More…

Honestly, there have been so many rapid changes and improvements that we’ve lost track of documenting everything! The best way to discover all the new features and enhancements is to dive in and explore BadgeFed 0.0.2 yourself. You might find some pleasant surprises we forgot to mention here.

See BadgeFed at FOSDEM 2026! 🇧🇪

We’re presenting at FOSDEM 2026! Join us for:

“Decentralised Badges with BadgeFed: Implementing ActivityPub-based Credentials for Non Profits” 📅 January 31, 4:30pm local time
📍 Brussels, Belgium
🔗 Session Details

Come say hi and see BadgeFed in action!

For full documentation and setup instructions, check out our GitHub repo.

Badge up! 🏅

Bonfire shared inbox usage

Hi @mayel@sunbeam.city, does Bonfire utilise the sharedInbox value?

I noticed this come through my nginx logs today:

128.140.127.206 - - [21/Jan/2026:19:58:04 +0000] "POST /uid/1/inbox HTTP/1.1" 500 128 "-" "https://btfree.social - Bonfire ActivityPub federation" "-"

/uid/1/inbox is an endpoint specified in my user's inbox, but that actor also sends "endpoints":{"sharedInbox":"https://activitypub.space/inbox"}, so wanted to double-check that Bonfire uses it.

W Social completely erasing Mastodon and Eurosky on the map on its signup page may finally bring ATproto and AP together.

I wrote apps and entered hackathons with tools to add AI-generated and human-reviewed after posting, only to realize my followers never even saw the updates federate from my ActivityPub server. Oops. So I started fresh and built Fediverse Composer Studio so the AI-generated and Hashtag generation happens before posting, so everyone’s included. Give feedback. fediversestudio.zero.vedfolnir
