Content warning:transphobia on the hellsite (threads)
I posted some #TransJoy on Threads.com and I got 250 replies! Wow I wonder what that's like?!
lol, of course it's a transphobia trashfire. This always happens. Threads.com is a cesspit of #transphobia. The Fediverse was right to shut that shit down.
1000%. https://infosec.exchange/@thenexusofprivacy/115744566383286139 touches on some of the same points - including the need for vigilance.
As things worked out Fedi was just a positioning spin and contingency plan for them. That said they were clearly hoping it would be more an accelerator in some way or they wouldn't have dumped the resources into it that they did ... and if it seemed like they were really making progress they would have invested more.
The fierce and high-profile resistance of #FediPact and the Free Fediverse made it clear that nope, the "upsides" they were hoping for probably weren't going to happen. Of course that's not the only thing that changed but it's certainly a big factor!
And as you say, just like Gab, they're widely defederated. Defederation' is a blunt tool and fedi relies on it too much but it is effective at fighting fascists!
@thenexusofprivacy
This is indeed a positive signal. That said, as long as an enemy element is still on the working group, ongoing vigilance is indicated.
It's not all that surprising that they're getting "bored" with ActivityPub. The regulatory threat is waning with the fascist capture of the US and possible in-progress collapse of GDPR, so the need to openwash in this particular manner is no longer as acute. And I will always believe that the pushback from #FediPact and the widespread response of revulsion from the community was a thing they had not previously encountered, were inept at countering, and that successfully pissed into their punchbowl.
In fact, most of the fedi is blocking them at this point except for the flagship, so if/when they pull out altogether almost no one will even notice except for the collaborators
đź‘€ From the Verge's interview with Connor Hayes, the head of Threads:
Threads still supports federation with other apps like Mastodon, but Hayes was clear that it’s not a top priority for the current roadmap. “It’s something that we’re supporting, it’s something that we’re maintaining, but it’s not the thing that we’re talking about that’s gonna help the app break out,” he said.
“As someone who has built a zillion consumer products, it’s just really hard to keep these divergent platforms and products consistent on the same protocol over time,” he explained. “There’s always going to be the trade-offs that these companies are thinking about of how much energy do I want to pour into compatibility with this ecosystem versus iterating on this thing I’m building and seeing what’s valuable.”
So wow, it's almost like Mark F---ing Zuckerberg was LYING when he talked about the importance of decentralization when Threads launched! Who, who could have predicted?
Although of course, they're Meta, they could well be lying again. So let's not get complacent here. Still, it's a good opportunity to take a moment to laugh at all the fediverse influencers who pointed to Threads adoption of ActivityPub as a huge victory for our cause -- and a key ingredient to fedi's success going forward. How'd that work out?
And let's also give credit where credit is due: @FediPact and everybody else who pushed back so strongly against Threads and made it clear that so many of us really don't want them here. They've got infinite resources, and If they were seeing value from the integration, they'd continue to push it. It sounds like they're not, at least for now. Good news!!!!
Content warning:Daily random quote out of context from my academic book about Mastodon
First, it is false to argue that the #fedipact members are against openness. As I have argued across this bok, the covenantal fediverse is open to people who want to become members. They just have to do a few things: see themselves not as signing up for social media, but joining a community and abiding by its ethical standards....

On the Threads numbers, your theory that they're counting people on Instagram and get shown a Threads post is certainly plausible.
Details aside though the most likely explanation seems to me that Meta is lying (as they have about numnbers in the past -- remember the "pivot to video" lolsob).
